Pop Culture Fix: Disney Unveils Its First “Boy Princess” and CW Gets Ready To Gay Up Its DC Crossover

Today is the day before Thanksgiving and what I am thankful for is Betty Cooper’s mom on Riverdale and also Cheryl Blossom and extra also: you! Here’s your Pop Culture Fix, which includes maybe some other things to the thankful for.

+ The full trailer for Lena Waithe’s The Chi is here! When the first trailer came out, Riese did a deep investigation into the show’s actors to figure out who’s going to play the lesbian characters.

Out lesbian Liz Johnson wins PBA Tour event, only second woman to do so!

+ Sarah Paulson talked to Entertainment Weekly about that wacko AHS: Cult finale. She’s also in talks with Warner Brothers to star in The Goldfinch, but as some dude’s girlfriend, which maybe explains why she keeps starring in Ryan Murphy everything; she never plays second fiddle to a man when she’s playing a cult leader/senator.

+ Have you checked out Kayla’s review of the first three episodes of Hulu’s Runaways? You should do that right now! Here’s a little interview with the cast from the folks at Hypable.

Of course, there was one particular aspect of the original comics that everyone was curious to know about. Was Karolina’s sexuality going to carry over into the show? And, while Gardner couldn’t definitively tell us, she very strongly hinted that it would.

“Obviously it’s Marvel, so I can’t say too much,” Gardner told us. “But I can say that I don’t think fans will be disappointed. And as you can see, Lyrica and I do have good chemistry. I’ll leave you with that.”

Cocaine Godmother, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones as drug queenpin Griselda Blanco, premieres January 20 on Lifetime. Blanco was bisexual IRL and it looks like she’s gonna be bisexual on Lifetime too.

Disney Sends Beautiful Message With First ‘Boy Princess,’ Complete With Chest Hair (You think it’s going to zig into trans panic but it zags when a character is like, “Uh, princesses can have chest hair too.”)

+ And finally, the full trailer for the CW’s superhero crossover event Crisis on Earth X is here and there’s a lot of Sara Lance and Alex Danvers being framed together and my sneaking suspicion is that’s not all they’re going to be doing together. Next Monday is when it starts. (P.S. I’m too old to be yelled at by shippers.)

    • This is a perfect picture! I love Cheryl Blossom and keep waiting for the bi reveal… it has to happen, right? Please CW don’t disappoint me in this one thing… you owe all queers after the Bread man on Supergirl…

  1. I’m so hype for Sara and Alex! I wish they could be more than just a fling but I’ll take what I can get.

  2. Star vs. The Forces of Evil is so awesome! Did you know that there are like 5 gay couples in one episode? The episode “Just Friends” when Jackie and Marco are kissing at the concert there are like 5 gay couples in the crowd kissing too! =D

  3. I can’t decide whether Cocaine Godmother is the best or the worst title I’ve ever heard. Either way, I’m glad they finally recongised Velma Kelly’s blatant bisexuality.

Just a heads-up: I watched the trailer VERY CLOSELY (for science), and the galpal in the tumbnail of this article does appear to be dead at 1:10.

  4. Hi Heather did you also know that Coronation Street is back at it with another lesbian storyline, which is shaping up to be an affair (bad) between two best friends (relatable) but one is married to a man (bad) but so far they’re doing a pretty OK job with it! Also one of the characters is South Asian and Muslim which is pretty amazing, representation wise!

Also they have really good chemistry and cute Manchester accents and well they look like this:

  5. I remember watching that Cocaine Cowboys documentary, which some of Griselda Blanco’s crimes. That woman was FUCKING WILD. Definitely not somebody you would ever want to fuck with.

  6. Um… bisexual character or not, isn’t casting Catherine Zeta-Jones in that role an act of whitewashing? She’s Welsh-Irish. I’m just confused why AS seems to be endorsing the role and wondering if I’m missing something? =/

    • I honestly think that because 75% of the characters Zeta-Jones plays are Latina, people don’t realize she’s the whitest and instead think she actually is Latina or “part brown” or “something. Also maybe because they think Zeta is Spanish? It’s depressing.

    • Looked it up, she’s like fully Welsh. I thought Zeta was a last name from Spain, but I guess not. Yes, I agree about the white-washing of that role, and the fact that AS didn’t mention it.

  7. First we had Cazejo as a feisty bisexual Theo in The Haunting.
Then she played a ferociously hot lesbian therapist in Side Effects.
AND NOW? NOW?? She gets to play a bisexual drug lordess?!

THANK YOU TO ALL THE DEITIES AND PEOPLE WHO MADE THIS POSSIBLE THANK YOU.

    • She was one of my childhood’s celebrity crush and I thought I could die happy after that scene on Side Effects with Rooney Mara (lucky girl) and now this!

Well, let’s just hope they don’t screw this up!

  8. So Lifetime couldn’t find a single Latin actor to play her, they just had to bring in a white woman to play a Columbian??!

  9. It’d be cool if non-Colombians could pick literally anything else from Colombian culture to celebrate besides drug dealers/murderers.

    • The first things that come to my mind are music and Simon Bolivar. I sometimes think the American obsession with the cartels is some sort of perverse way of justifying our “war on drugs”.
