Playlist: Top 20 Underrated Selena Songs

feature images by Al Rendon

The Queen of Tejano Music‘s discography is impressive and vast for such a young star gone too soon. But when we think of Selena, we think of her beloved top hits like “Como La Flor,” “Baila Esta Cumbia,” and “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” along with quite a few others. We can’t help but belt these songs out and keep them on repeat because they’re our faves and we’ll always keep them close to our hearts — I know I do. However, Selena Y Los Dinos were super talented and not only were their major hits f*cking great, their not-so hits were equally as enjoyable and good, like you can’t go wrong with listening to a whole Selena album. Here I’ve curated what I think are some of her best and underrated songs. I’m bringing it way back to her first albums with old school Tejano music and cumbias, a few of her English songs (one that has that Paula Abdul 80s/90s swag) and some of her mariachi songs.

  1. Gracias, Yvonne! “La Llamada” is perhaps my favorite song of hers, and I DO belt it out, but I don’t know the others on your list as well. I’ll definitely check them out.

  2. So many of Selena’s songs were the shit. I think a lot of artists today were influenced by her. Selena Gomez was even named after her.

And that biopic is still the greatest thing Jennifer Lopez has ever done, btw. I have such a hard time not hating the actress who played her killer even though I know it was just a part. Every time I see her in something I’m like “There goes that bitch that killed Selena”.

  3. Great list! Lets not forget Wherever You Are (Donde Quiera Que Estes)featuring the Barrio Boyzz. So good!

  4. I keep Ya No in my heart because it reminds me of when I was young and my mom would play her Selena cassette all the time. Muy buena lista :)

  5. Added to bucket list duet Baila Conmigo with someone.
I’ve already got a complicated strange thing with Selena numerically and cross-culturally, but that song brings some sort of brujería to the table.
That song is witchcraft, my kind of witchcraft.
