Playlist: So You Struck Out

Let’s be honest. Pursuing women can be exhausting. And while we’re telling the truth, let’s admit that we’ve all struck out before. I don’t know anyone that’s batting a thousand and if you are, bless your soul. Some days I feel like I’m always Robin, never Batman. That’s not the worst thing because they’re both gay but sometimes I just wanna be Batman, ya know? This is a playlist for when you finally gather up the courage to tell a girl something feelings related or that you’d really enjoy hanging out with her sexually and her response is to S that D. Shut it down.

For me, rejection is something I used to experience alone (and much less frequently). I’d keep it to myself and go over every detail in my head, trying to figure out where I went wrong before settling on the conclusion that women are silly and I’m the best so whatever. Normally, I’m a pretty private person. I’m too proud to acknowledge defeat and too stubborn to listen to anyone else’s opinion so sharing my romantic adventures with friends has never been a major talking point with me. But now I’m in a place where I have so many things to worry about, I find myself dishing the deets about my love life like a school girl as a distraction to the bigger issues at hand.

I’m sharing my triumphs, failures, and even the inbetweens. I don’t think anyone would ever describe me as lacking confidence, but it’s still nice to hear your friends reassure you that you’re amazing, super cute, and a genuinely nice person. Of course this can be frustrating because it’d be much easier to understand rejection if you were a gigantic asshole. It’s especially frustrating when you get the friend offer or even worse, the good friend offer. “Let’s be good friends” is the friend zone of the friend zone.

The point is, I’m ok with who I am as a person. I enjoy who I am and I’m excited to see the person I’ll become. One person’s (or several people’s) stance on who I am isn’t enough to shake that fortitude. But sometimes, even though you know you’re the shit, you just want to listen to some songs about not getting the girl and know that you’re not alone.

      • Seeing as how I live in the Lesbian Friend Zone. I volunteer to start that band.

But my only musical experience is that I played cello for eight years, so is that a problem?

      • I concur this band should exist. Also, said band should probably perform an awkward rendition of “Zou Bisou Bisou” at the A-Camp talent show for all to behold.

    • I think because lesbians are “known for” so frequently sleeping with our friends group, so the term friend zone doesn’t seem to hold as much weight or finality??

I personally refer to myself as slut-zoned sometimes, which I think is what happens to me instead of being friend zoned…

  1. oh I’ll make sure I use this playlist the next time it happens. Because it always does, lol
    :Batman issues:

  2. so timely. *sigh*

(relatedly: if you get the “just want to be friends” and they seem to genuinely be interested in keeping you as a friend, which i am not averse to, what’s the minimal time before contact again? because she started texting me after a week, and i’m not down with this.)

    • There’s no set time. It’s gotta be when you feel ready or it’s all bad. If she’s a decent person, (which I’m sure she is because I bet you have impeccable taste) she’ll understand. Maybe she’s even been there before.

  3. There are worse things than being Robin. I mean Grayson still got Batgirl(Barbra Gordon) for a while. Even got a fling with that crazy Huntress girl.

Now being Alfred that would be terrible. Just wandering around a big, empty house all alone. Dusting a giant penny and trying to keep various utility belts well stocked. That would just be sad.

  4. I’m loving the Scott Pilgrim pictures! I feel like that movie tells the story of my life, only minus Knives and Ramona. v_v *le sigh*

  5. Mr. T Experience! I didn’t even finish reading the rest playlist until I got my MTX cds into the stereo.

  6. A while back, A friend gave me a tshirt that read “CHICKS SUCK” after a particularly painful strike-out that sent me to the suburbs of the “friend-zone”..Since then, when that happens I go home, put on the shirt and eat a container of Ben & Jerry’s..Now I won’t need to do it in silence..And for the record:I would never want to be Brittani’s “close friend”..But “special friend” Yes!

  7. This is amazing! Also, that Monarchy song and I are in a serious relationship and I do want to dance with it.

    • Hotel room jam. Please follow it with Cobra Starship – You Make Me Feel. Face will be off from dancing.

  8. Also, when I was in my early teens* my rejection song was “I Didn’t Like You Anyway” or “You Don’t Wanna Call” by The Donnas. Changed all the pronouns, like a good baby les of course.

*Still relevant to my adult life, who am I kidding

  9. Holy. Crap.
First of all, loooooove Scott Pilgrim.
Secondly, I feel like I could have written this because this is EXACTLY the shit I’m going through right now. Riiiiidicccc.
    Thanks for that.

  10. Other great strike-out tunes:

The Shins – Mine’s Not a High Horse
Bright Eyes – Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh
Alanis – Flinch <– great for those awkward times when you run into the object of your affections and you're trying to act like you're not hurt but you really are. feels bad man

  11. Fall For Your Type by Jamie Foxx & Drake has gotta be my song lately and since you included it in this playlist I love you! Haha it’s such an underrated song from that album and it fits me well. Going off track here but I got tickets to see Drake and I’m guaranteed the seats in the first 15 rows! I’ve never been so excited :D
