Playlist: Brooklyn-Based Queer Musicians With A Lot Of (Upbeat) Feelings

Brooklyn! Brooklyn is a pretty rad place, I hear. They’ve got that bridge situation going on, Coney Island is in Brooklyn, a bunch of Autostraddle staff members live there, but MOST RELEVANT TO THIS ARTICLE, Brooklyn is becoming a hotspot for queer women who make music, including newly out musician Jenny Owen Youngs and a bunch of her pals! Yeah! So in honor of Jenny Owen Youngs Day, here is a playlist of upbeat songs by queer women who are based out of Brooklyn. Onward, gaywads!

Intern Grace

Grace Ellis has been writing and making hack-job graphics for Autostraddle since 2011 and is a co-creator and co-writer of the comic book series Lumberjanes. She is mostly an intern in name only. (Mostly.) She lives in Columbus, Ohio because why anything. Also, she wants to write the Black Widow movie and feels like if she just keeps telling people, eventually she will be allowed to do it. She has a Twitter and a Tumblr, both of which are pretty above average.

Grace has written 89 articles for us.

  1. you know how sometimes i say a thing is “everything i never knew i wanted”? WELL, this playlist is everything i definitely knew i wanted! thanks for transcribing my ipod onto autostraddle, grace face! <3

  2. While she’s a very talented singer, I just want to point out Toshi Reagon is performing at this coming MichFest and is one of the performers who haven’t made any statement about the festival’s “womyn-born-womyn” policy (recently Nona Hendryx, JD Samson and God Des & She specifically said they would not play at the festival again until the policy changes). So, yes, that’s everyone’s personal choice as to how they feel about that. Much as I respect Ms. Reagon’s abilities (and her mom) I’m not interested in having any of her music. :(
