PLAYLIST: 30 Covers of The Greatest Christmas Song Ever

You already know what this is gonna be, don’t you?

In 1994, Pop/R&B crossover princess Mariah Carey gave us the greatest Christmas song that we didn’t know we needed, but oh so desperately did. All I Want For Christmas Is You has been a holiday chart topper for some twenty-two years now and will continue to be a classic for lifetimes to come. Artists have covered it year after year, trying to capture Mariah’s essence in their own versions. And while some of them are great, they’ll never be her. We’ve got Kidz Bop, the Biebs, and even Lady Antebellum. So whether you’re a little bit country or a little bit rock’n’roll, they’ve got your back. Here, have 2 hours of All I Want For Christmas Is You just for you.

  1. This is the most relevant to my Jewish heart because I love this song, and also since most Christmas songs were written by Jews, they have become part of my culture, particularly this song. I love Christmas music so much, but only random arrangements of them (never the “original” arrangement). The Broadway community puts out a Christmas CD every year called Carols for a Cure to raise money for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Each Broadway show does an awesome original arrangement of a Christmas (ahem, “holiday”) song. Like you can hear Idina Menzel circa 2003 sing “I Saw Three Ships” or the cast of Spring Awakening circa 2006 sing a rock/pop version of “I Wonder as I Wander” which is really cool. The arrangements are generally in the theme/tone/musical language of the show.

Merry Jewmas to all and to all a good latke!

  2. Thank you for this magnificence Alaina! I made a playlist a couple of years ago with 16 versions of this song but yours is 1.875 times better.
