Playlist: 2013 Is Looking Bright

2013 is looking so bright! The brightest. I say this most years, but this time I’m even more serious because there are already so many great things to look forward to. New albums from Holly Miranda and Tegan & Sara. Pitch Perfect being released on DVD. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the Golden Globes. No more Twilight movies, not this year or ever. 2013 might be the year that you graduate or move overseas or get a great job or get a girlfriend or marry your girlfriend or start a band or accomplish other great things. As my father never told me, if you can dream it you can do it!

Here’s a little uplifting musical accompaniment as you power into January and make 2013 your best year yet. Go slay it, tigers.

  1. Pitch Perfect DVD! I thought I was the only person who’s looking forward to that. Also yes to no more Twilight movies. But there will be a new Hunger Games film out this year.

  2. See, I just bypassed the Pitch Perfect DVD altogether and put the movie on my iPhone so I carry it around with me close to my heart. I love those awesome nerds! Plus, let’s not forget that Pretty Little Liars is back in a couple of days.

    • Lanie because i can’t lie to you, i’m going to confess that i actually really enjoyed the first two Twilight movies because i have an appreciation for Kristen Stewart and things that are naff. however the third twilight movie was one of the worst things i’ve ever seen, the franchise went from ‘so bad it’s good’ to just flat out terrible and so i’m glad it’s over. RIP Twilight.

      • welp I thank you for your honesty and I sort of have to admit that while I fell asleep during the first movie I did appreciate the first two soundtracks, if that helps?

  3. Although not a favourite track we saw the new year in with Tom Petty Free fallin’ having a whole bunch of us drunkenly sing along was pretty uplifting. Despite it not having uplifting lyrics, Manic Street Preacher’s ‘motorcycle emptiness’ is always guaranteed to uplift me, for ages I started the day with Wake Up by Arcade Fire, but i’m also partial to The cure’s Friday I’m in Love as an alarm song. And I am a sucker for an Oasis anthem!

I’m a bit of step with new music, I’ve spent a long time immersing myself in my gran’s record collection – to that ELO has been getting airtime, Mr Blue Sky fits the uplifting bill. So not totally sure what’s on the playlist for 2013, however, off the top of my head I’m looking forward to new albums from Biffy Clyro, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arcade Fire and Depeche Mode.

Oh and I’ve never seen any of the Twilight films or read the books, I don’t feel like I’ve missed anything!

  4. It’s so perfect that this playlist starts out with “Survival.” I’m going to see Muse when they tour in the US this spring, so my year is already better than any other year.

  5. Had to come back to this, awoke this morning to find David Bowie has returned with a surprisingly good song, all is right with the world. Spending my lunch break listening to it. Time well spent!

  6. We do know that Pitch Perfect is already out, right? Because I have been watching it almost nonstop for about three weeks now. Er, I guess it might not be out in other countries, though? Not sure.

“This Year” by the Mountain Goats is pretty much the ultimate New Year’s song to me, but it’s not really a feel-good song, you know? It is crazy realistic and down-to-earth, though, so it’s the most accurate. If I want inspiration, I’ll listen to Kanye’s “Touch the Sky.”

    • Pitch Perfect is still showing at the cinemas in Australia, we’re usually behind the rest of the world when it comes to movie releases.

re ‘This Year’, I chose to include it because the lyric “I’ll make it through this year if it kills me” is how I feel on Jan 1st most years.

  7. Being behind as always, today I got Get Along on vinyl. In addition to it being excellent, I am a sucker for colored vinyl (white, in this case).

  8. I’d sure imagine that Jesus will want me in order to reach a handful of unsuitable persons just before getting together the right one, with the intention that as soon as conclusively match the personal, deal with learn how to become gracious.

  9. I just wanted to say that this playlist helped me get through 2013. It wasn’t the best year. I listened to some or all of these songs every month and they made me see possibilities instead of just more closed doors.
