Netflix Has Renewed “One Day at a Time” for a Third Season, 20GayTeen Continues to Bless Us All

20GayTeen continues to bless us in its fullness! The Alvarez family is coming back! Netflix just announced that it has renewed One Day at a Time for a third season, just two months after the show’s second season dropped and broke our hearts and stitched them back together and made us swoon swoon swoon. (And then, of course, we read Carmen’s review and interview with her mom and cried all over again!)

While dozens of mainstream critics have written glowing reviews — ODAAT has a stunning 98% Rotten Tomatoes rating after two season — and called repeatedly for the show’s renewal on social media, showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett was quick to thank fans after the announcement. And so were the stars of the show.

(Rita Moreno hasn’t tweeted about it yet, but I wasn’t about to exclude her.)

This is my favorite TV news in a year that has been absolutely ripe with brilliant and exciting queer TV news. In fact, when my girlfriend texted me this announcement we were in the middle of a senior editors’ meeting and we all cheered and disbanded so I could write this post. Hurray for authentic diverse storytelling by people who share identities and experiences with the characters they’re writing about! More of this! (And more Rita Moreno forever.)

  4. Great news. West Side Story was on tv the other week and I caught the part where Rita Moreno was singing the song America. She really is a treasure and glad she gets to be on a show as good as this.

  5. Me: Have you finished watching the second season of One a Day at a Time?

Mom: No! I couldn’t take it anymore! It was like having a conversation with you.

I somehow didn’t realize it at the time, but…mean.

  6. Never exclude Rita Moreno! So happy about this because I kept hearing that Netflix was renewing all these unscripted shows and I was like um, how about the scripted ones.

Hopefully Netflix also gets on renewing Everything Sucks.

  7. I am so happy they renewed one of my favorite shows on Netflix, I mean I seriously put this on at night to go to sleep to and end up watching it all over again. I got my friends hooked on this wonderful show.

  8. Along with GBBO this is one of my “therapy” shows for when I need something comforting that I can put on and curl up on the couch in a blanket and be sick and watch it. So happy about this renewal.

  9. was casually singing ‘this is it’ by lo moon at work one day and my super straight lady co-worker was like, “one day at a time!!” this show is a precious sitcom and i and others adore it and i’m just so pleased it’s coming back ^_^
