Music Fix: New Fiona Apple! New Missy Higgins!

The past 24 hours have been pretty fantastic.

Fiona Apple, “Every Single Night”

Fiona Apple continues to amaze me, she really can’t set a foot wrong. The first single from her upcoming album, The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw, And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do (out June 19) is SO GOOD. I suspect this song is all I’ll be listening to on my 14-hour flight to A-Camp tomorrow, and that it won’t be enough.

Missy Higgins, “Unashamed Desire”

I’m equally fond of this new single and music video by Missy Higgins, which is her first release in five years and quite the head nod to bisexuality. As Missy sings sweet words about having nothing to hide, boy and girl dancers strip her clothing off piece by piece and then she starts throwing around rainbow confetti. Pedestrian quipped “The presser (for the video) says it’s about her decision to quit music, which we totally believe if her decision to quit music was related to being proud of her sexuality.” Pretty much.

The music video was directed by Natasha Pincus, who was also responsible for that Gotye music video. You know the one. Missy’s new album, The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle, will be out on June 1.

  1. Love Missy’s new single! The Making of the Album part 1 and 2 videos on youtube are a fun little tease. Also, she has great hair.

  2. I watched these videos at 3am when I was trying to do essays and was buzzing on too much coffee and now I feel like I need some rainbow confetti and maybe someone to interpretively dance while I finish this essay.

  3. Fiona Apple is a poetic genius. I’ve been a fan since ’96 and with each album she amazes. She sets the bar for female vocalist. I expect nothing but beauty from her newest album. Very excited for her summer tour, just purchased my tickets!

  4. Can we talk about the fact that the rainbow-colored confetti are all triangle shaped? It doesn’t get more on the nose than that. And, am I the only one getting serious Suze Orman vibes off the hair?

  5. I love Missy Higgins and this video. I remember her tweeting about how she had to cut up a billion pieces of confetti for her music video and how they all had to be triangles too.

  6. I’m so glad I never knew Missy Higgins had given up music till I read this. Periodically for the last few (five? really?) years I’d think about her music longingly and wonder why I didn’t get a new album to listen to. Then I’d figure it’d just be around the corner. Y’know, since it has been forever since the last one.

If I didn’t have that naive optimism in the back of my mind, I don’t think I would have survived.

  7. I woke up this morning to discover that these songs existed and now am thanking the heavens for such a blessing. The music gods must be pleased with us.

  8. So I had no idea Fiona Apple was still making music and this makes me happy! Her voice is so incredible and unique….aaand everytime I think of her I get mental images of her rolling around in her panties in the “Criminal” video, which is also incredible ;)
