Music Fix: Metric, Gossip, Missy Higgins And More

Welcome to the next installment of the not-so-weekly music fix!  This week in music, Spotify finally launched in Australia and so I’ve spent the past 48 hours making playlists. As well as listening to/watching these cool things, which I think you might enjoy:

Metric’s New Song, “Speed Collapse”

Metric’s new album, Synthetica, is dropping next month (June 12!) and the band have given you another little taste of what’s to come.

Does anyone else think that “Speed Collapse” shares a similar groove to Synthetica‘s first single, “Youth Without Youth”? Is that just me? Regardless, I really dig this track and don’t want to listen to anything else today.

New Video: Gossip’s “Move In The Right Direction”

The Gossip’s new music video for “Move In The Right Direction” is my favourite clip of the year so far. I think the appeal is partly the typography and partly Beth Ditto’s BAMF-ness, although the song is pretty great too. Check it out.

Have you heard their new album, A Joyful Noise? I tend to agree with everyone who’s said it’s a little more Material Girl than Riot Grrrl, but think it’s definitely worth adding to your iPod.

Missy Higgins Watch: In The Studio

Here’s a new behind-the-scenes video of Missy Higgins making magic in the recording studio and talking about her upcoming album, The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle. I enjoy the way she says “intricate little maneuvers” as well as what’s going on with her hair right now.

The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle is out on June 1 in Australia and July 17 in the USA and elsewhere.

Also!

*  The Austin City Limits line-up has been announced and it’s not bad at all.

*  The Scissor Sisters‘ new album, Magic Hour, is out today! If you haven’t already heard, Azealia Banks features on one of the album’s stand-out tracks, “Shady Love”.

*  Speaking of Azealia Banks, her new EP 1991 will be available digitally on May 29.

Regina Spektor‘s new album, What We Saw From The Cheap Seats (out May 29) is streaming in full over at NPR and it’s as rad as I’d hoped it’d be. Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros’ new album, Here, is also streaming.

*  Aussie duo An Horse have announced a Canadian tour with Brand New.

* If you listen to loud music then researchers think you probably also smoke a lot of weed and have unprotected sex.

Someone finally located the bridge from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers song “Under the Bridge.” I just found this really interesting.

  1. Crystal, this list be bangin!
Combat Baby was my Jam back when I was a high school freshy! And I’ve been on a total Gossip kick lately- had no idea they got a new video out (& that’s why you’re Boss).
Thanks for the Scissor Sisters & Regina Spektor updates too!

    Music Fix > caffeine fix

  2. So I think if my local gay bars played more Gossip and less top 40, I wouldn’t need to drink as much to have a fucking fabulous time. MAYBE THIS IS THEIR SECRET TACTIC.

  3. I’ve been waiting for this Gossip album to be released all year! It’s definitely a bit different from albums’ past but I still have a handful of songs I’m already hooked on. Love those guys.

I also agree with the post above, more Gossip in bars.

  4. crystal can you just send me emails about music like once a day? cuz your taste and quickness to the new new, makes me just love you so hard.

    • You guys, Gossip streamed their show in NYC on Tuesday night and non other than Gabrielle was seen rocking out in the front row! Totally jealous!

I have a feeling my Gossip kick is going to overshadow all these other albums that have come/are coming out.

  5. So excited for new Metric!

I finally listened to Regina Spektor’s new album and I’m liking it much more than her last couple. Small Town Moon and Patron Saint are my faves right now.

Urgh, the ACL lineup is killing me because I live in Austin and want to see it all, but I work weekends and I’m sure I can’t get the time off :/

Oh oh and I kind of love the An Horse/Brand New combo.

  6. Next week is going to be amazing simply because of the new albums from Regina Spektor and Missy Higgins. It’s been too long since either have released new music.

I’m curious to know what Anthony Kiedis thinks of someone finding the bridge from “Under the Bridge.” The background on that song is so somber. Thanks for including the article, Crystal!

  7. Missy Higgins’ new album isn’t being released in the US until July 17 and it is killing. me. slowly. I think it would cost me like $30 to order the cd from Australia, but I’m really tempted to be irresponsible and do it, anyway.

  8. Someone talk with me about the new Sigur Rós album, which came out today. I just listened to it, start to finish. It’s pretty amazing. Only now I have too many feelings to be able to sleep.

  9. playing the new metric song on repeat now – i love it
so excited for their new album
    and regina spektor!!!!

  10. Metric, Regina, Missy Higgins, Scissor Sisters PLUS a week and a half until Brandi Carlile’s new album!

Now if Rilo Kiley would just get back together this would be the most perfect month for music ever.

    • It would be nice if RK at the very least would release the album of unreleased tracks and b-sides like Jenny and Blake have been promising for what seems like forever.

  11. Oh An Horse are touring with Cursive as well as Brand New. That would be such an amazing show. They need to come to Sydney!

  12. I’m in love with Youth Without Youth, and so excited to hear the rest of the new Metric album!

  13. I don’t think I can forgive Regina for the rerecording of Ne Me Quitte Pas. This is almost worse then the Folding Chair revamp. Regina, I love you girl, but why do you do these things?

I’m really hoping the new Metric album can come even close the greatness that was Fantasies. So far I’m liking everything I have heard. I have high hopes for you Emily Hanes.
