About Me

About Me

Hi, I’m Gi. I’m a high-functioning hobo with a lot of nerdy interests and a black belt in smartassery. I play bass and sing in a punk band, I’m writing a graphic novel, and as a college dropout, I’m sporadically employed by a potpourri of non-sequitur dayjobs that, while usually awful, always make for at least one good story. And since I’m that guy who tells stories at parties, it all shakes out in the end.
It’s a pleasure to meet you.

What I Like

Favorite Books

My favorite book is probably Blankets by Craig Thompson. Yes, it’s a graphic novel. If your gut response is to go, “Yeah, but what’s your favorite *real* book?”, then you are exactly the kind of person who needs to read Blankets.
In fact, everybody just needs to read more comics. Seriously. Watchmen, Y: The Last Man, Demo, Sandman, My Brain Hurts, DMZ, Hellboy, The Boys, Scott Pilgrim, the Umbrella Academy, Walking Dead, Ghost World, Persepolis, just…go. Go find a comic shop and buy some damn comics.

As to the aforementioned *real* books… this is kind of embarrassing, but I haven’t really updated my list of faves since I was, like, 15, so it comes off as equal parts “books I had to read for school” and “books they sell at Hot Topic”. I’m trying to rectify this at the moment, but my “To Read” list is incredibly daunting, and my attention span…uh…isn’t. The last thing I read was the first two Dragon Tattoo books, which I loved, and I’m currently trying to read Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran-Foer, but I’m already looking for the next thing, so please, send me some recommendations if you have any.

Favorite Queer Books

…yeah, exactly what I just said about books in general. I can recommend a couple really solid comics (My Brain Hurts, Dar, Fun Home, Likewise), but I could really use some advice in this department. (Yes, I know Autostraddle already provides this service. I intend to make good use of it.)

Favorite Movies

Oh, God. All of them.
Random Sampling: Inception, Run Lola Run, Sleeper, Little Miss Sunshine, Pan’s Labyrinth, the original Star Wars trilogy, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Taxi Driver, Inglourious Basterds, SLC Punk, the Social Network, Tank Girl, A Few Good Men, Persepolis, Sucker Punch, Mystery Train, the Commitments, the Fall, Amelie, Donnie Darko, Shaun of the Dead, Almost Famous, Labyrinth, Mean Girls, Slumdog Millionaire, the Iron Giant, the Fighter, the Lost Boys, Rear Window, O Brother Where Art Thou, Say Anything, Le Jete, Jurassic Park, Black Swan, and anything by Studio Ghibli.

Favorite Documentaries

Maxed Out, Forks Over Knives, Bigger Stronger Faster*, Bowling For Columbine, Why We Fight, Paradise Lost, Catfish, Outfoxed, Rumsfeld’s War, Heavy Metal in Baghdad, Dogtown and Z Boys, This Film is Not Yet Rated, Exit Through the Gift Shop…I love Documentaries.
Oh, and I’m sucker for music retrospectives and band tour diaries.

Favorite TV Shows

I don’t watch a lot of TV, but when I do it’s usually cartoons (Venture Bros, SuperJail, Futurama, Adventure Time) or high-budget genre-fiction drama (True Blood, Sons of Anarchy, Walking Dead) or British (Spaced, Peep Show, Skins, Little Britain, Sherlock, Kitchen Nightmares). Or it’s 30 Rock. Hell yes, 30 Rock.

Favorite Music

I hate it when you ask people what kind of music they like and they go, “Oh, I like everything.”
NO YOU DO NOT.
That being said…I kind of like everything.
Let me put it this way: if Music was a University, I’d be double-majoring in Punk Rock and Pop, and minoring in General Studies. My favorite bands are A.F.I. and Jawbreaker, but I grew up listening to Hip-Hop while learning to play bluegrass and celtic fiddle; I routinely get hurt in moshpits, but got into a fistfight defending Lady Gaga; and get equally stoked when I find vinyl reissues of Chuck Berry or New Order.
So, yeah, it’s a hell of a mixed bag.
In addition to violin, I also play guitar, and I play bass and sing in a pop-punk band called Lavender Blonde.
Oh, and my favorite Tegan & Sara record is The Con.

you can afford to lose a little face,
the things you break, some can be replaced,
a simple rule- every day, be sure you wake.”

Favorite Thing on Autostraddle.com

The tone of the whole site is just really great- I feel a whole lot less weird about myself and how I relate to the World of Gayness when the blogazine I go to for most of my news describes, for example, the Iowa Family Policy Center trying to dismantle gay marriage, as “Anti-Gay Religious Group in Iowa Uses Federal Funds to be Total Assholes”.
Also, that kind of stuff is easier to deal with when it’s sandwiched between stories about Rachel Maddow being dreamy and What Underpants to buy. Also: I get advice on what underpants to buy.
This is the best thing in the history of the internet.

Favorite Writers

Vonnegut, Kerouac, Ginsberg, Salinger, Thurber, Poe, Shakespeare, Tolkien, Kafka, Nabokov, Pahlaniuk, Rollins, dear god I need to read more books by women.
Also, comics: Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Craig Thompson, Becky Cloonan, Jess Fink, Liz Bailie, Brian Wood, Grant Morrison, Jeff Smith, Mike Mignola, Mark Millar, and anyone else anybody recommends to me.
