March Madness Continues: NCAA Women’s Championship Round Two

+

The first round of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship was this weekend and I don’t want to brag or anything, but I called two of the three major upsets from the 32 games played over the past two days. How did you do?

FINAL SCORES

#11 Gonzaga over #6 Iowa 92-86
On Gonzaga’s way to an upset, Courtney Vandersloot and Kayla Standish accounted for 64 of the team’s 92 points. Vandersloot needs 10 points to become the first player in NCAA history to score 2,000 points and have 1,000 assists.

#10 Temple over #7 Arizona St 63-45

#10 Marist over #7 Iowa State 74-64

#13 University of Northern Iowa almost pulled off an upset of #4 Michigan State but apparently the universe hates Iowa and so all 3 of their teams lost.

In other slightly less important, but unbelievably embarrassing record breaking news, #16 Prairie View scored 8 points in the first twenty minutes of play setting an NCAA tournament record for fewest points scored in a half. They eventually fell 66-30 to #1 Baylor. I wish I could say that was the only blowout but #1 Tennessee beat #16 Stetson 99-34. If you have any friends from Stetson, pretend you don’t know that.

The second round of games is from March 21 – 22 on ESPN2 or ESPN3.com. Past scores, game times, and the bracket are also available.

GAMES TO WATCH

#6 Penn St. vs. #3 DePaul

#5 North Carolina vs. #4 Kentucky

#5 Georgia Tech vs. #4 Ohio State

#11 Gonzaga vs. #3 UCLA

Who are your picks for round two?

        • I do. Every time they play I always think this is gonna be the one. ND is gonna pull it off. And then they don’t and I sulk around. My Final Four is UConn, ND, Texas A&M, and Stanford.

If ND is aggressive they can get UConn in foul trouble. They’re not deep at all so if ND forces a starter to the bench for an extended period, UConn is gonna be in trouble. But I’m getting way ahead of myself because things are really shaken up after tonight.

  1. I’ll be interested to see how the Penn st./Depaul game turns out. For some reason I’ve taken an interest in Depaul’s teams, I think they are fairly decent.

I was rooting for St. John’s but they are playing Stanford, and I always want the pac-10 teams to do well.

  2. The timing of the games tonight brought up a huge conflict: Rachel Maddow or women’s basketball. I gave into my love for Rachel and am getting through her show then flipping over to the Zags and/or Stanford games

  3. Ha, I will take over this comment thread with my love of the Zags. Another brilliant game from Vandersloot and Standish and they’re back in the Sweet Sixteen and playing at home again, time to get revenge on Xavier for last year.

I had to laugh when the announcer called them the Gonzaga Zags

  4. Lady Vols vs Ohio is my DREAM GAME. I am like mega awk uncomf at work right now thinking about it, I am way eager for Saturday to be here. I swoon hard for lil Samantha Prahalis when I watch her play but am rooting for the Vols, no question.

I’m SO EXCITED. This is the only time I am thoroughly geeked out over a game. !!!!
