“Love Is Fluid” Announces Demi Lovato While Hugging An Inflatable Flamingo

Cool For The Summer” chanteuse Demi Lovato has yet to directly confirm rumors of her bisexuality, though she has managed to provocatively skirt the issue for quite some time now and is “definitely not denying” that “Cool for the Summer” is about her own experimentations with her sexuality. In the latest issue of Complex magazine, she discusses her opinions about sexuality and love while topless and casually perching atop an inflatable banana, as one does.

Ho hum, just another day.

Ho hum, just another day.

Reportedly, Complex deigned to ask the star about the widely-spread rumor that Ms. Lovato had at one time canoodled with famed attractive person Ruby Rose. “Rumors are rumors,” Lovato stated, “and people are going to spread them. You can believe what you want, but no, I was not in a relationship with her.”

As anyone who reads this website knows by now, it is literally impossible for lesbians to engage in sexual activity of any kind without being in a serious committed relationship to one another. Thanks for clearing that up, Demi! However, while Lovato denied having dated Rose, she did have some opinions to express regarding sexuality in general.

“By the way, love is fluid. Whether there’s been rumours with one specific person or not, that’s all that matters. Humans are humans, and when you connect with somebody on a spiritual level it doesn’t matter.”

Lovato went on to wax poetic about her relationship with lesbian gateway boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama, an actor from a television show that ended nine years ago. It’s very sweet actually; she describes how Valderrama encouraged her to get sober and look after herself, which I cannot snark about no matter how much I’d like to.

Later, Demi shared images from the shoot on her Instagram, prompting many fans to point out the strangely vaginal motif of this giant flamingo’s eye:

I mean.

I mean.

This certainly wouldn’t be the first time Demi has expressed an interest in vaginal art; just a few months ago, she became embroiled in controversy after she replaced a provocative-looking tattoo of a lipstick print (that really didn’t look like a lipstick print) with a rose. As we all learned from the intrepid team at True Directions in But I’m A Cheerleader, interest in vulva-related art is one of the most telling signs of early-onset queerness.

Resident sexy celebrity expert Riese Bernard notes, “I remember when I used to tell people that ‘all women were sexually fluid,’ which it turns out is definitely not true — it’s definitely true for a lot of people but not for everyone, maybe not even for me! I now realize that it just was an easier way to justify why I wanted to kiss girls. OH EVERYBODY DOES! You guys: not everybody does. I look forward to further revelations and vulva-related art from Demi Lovato.”

I MEAN.

I MEAN.

It is at this point that I remind Ms. Bernard that Demi actually said that love is fluid, not that sexuality is fluid, but I digress. Perhaps she skimmed the article. Is love fluid? I can’t tell because I’m dead inside.

When pressed for comment, noted Demi Lovato scholar Mey Rude offered her opinion on the singer’s current goings-on: “I’ve been a huge Demi fan ever since I was a college student watching her star in Disney Channel Original Movies like Camp Rock and Princess Protection Program, and if you’re a Demi fan who can use Google, then you’ve definitely seen rumors that Demi’s relationship with Selena Gomez was more than just one between friends. Or at least that Demi wanted to be more than friends. But also on a more serious note, I do think that it’s important that a young, super famous Latina is openly sexually fluid. Demi’s long been an advocate for being true to yourself and not letting the pressure to conform get you down, and so being out is another way that she can help inspire Latinas to love themselves for who they are.”

Wilmer Valderrama agrees.

  1. I hope I am not the only one who looks at her more recent stuff and realizes how really queer and trans they are.

  2. Remember that one time Demi tried to make Zendaya’s Barbie about her? Because there apparently there needs to be more Barbies that look like Demi and fewer Barbies that look like Zendaya? Because Demi’s apparently more “real”? And how a Demi Barbie would be more revolutionary?
    Ughhhhhhhhh.

    • Gabby would “NEVER EVEN USE THE WORLD VULVA.” She said clitoris but I was being anatomically correct.

    • It is definitely a vulva. Definitely. There are so many ways they could have chosen to position and/or edit that image that would not be so clearly a vaginal-reference. But here we are. In vulva-town.

    • I thought it was until I scrolled down. I thought Complex must just be that kind of scandalous magazine.

  3. I mean, love can be fluid, right? Sometimes I’m like “we are the world’s best couple, this is what dreams are made of and Lizzie McGuire was right again” other times it’s like, “yeah, hon, I’m on tumblr so…um…just lemme do me right now”.

  4. The contrast between how Demi vehemently denied ever dating Ruby, but then played an epic game of dodge the question when asked if they hooked up is hilarious. Considering how Ruby outed her on two social media platforms I can’t really blame Demi for being irked by questions about her, but I think in her interviews as of late that she’s been with women before. Unfortunately, for us, she looks like shes off the market for good because the girl cant stop talking about how she’d love to marry Wilmer

  5. As a diehard Selena Gomez fan, I kind of get the impression a lot of Selena Coco’s friends have been gay for her but she seems too wrapped up in traditional religion to Go There.

Mainly I just want Selena to stop fighting the gay. I feel like the world where she reciprocates Demi or, you know, ends up madly in love with Hayley Kiyoko would be a better place.

    • All of this. Especially the “…but she seems too wrapped up in traditional religion to Go There”

  6. And I also can’t really fault Demi for having tunnel vision for Wilmer. That guy always weirded me out, but he’s really gone above and beyond for her. She never talked about him until recently, but now that she has she’s admitted that, amongst other things, he flew across the country to visit her in Chicago when she was in treatment there back in 2010 every week for the entire 3 months that she was in there. So yeah, I’d love for her to publicly date a girl, but it’s understandable why she’s hung up on her bf.

While we’re on the subject of Demi: have you guys seen her new VF spread where she posed fully nude with no makeup, no fancy lighting and no Photoshop? It’s beautiful.

    • yeah i’d love to make fun of this relationship because you guys, it’s 2015 and she’s dating fucking fez, but he sounds actually very sweet and devoted to her.

and yes i have seen it and YES IT IS.

  7. Is it just me or is this recent “love is fluid” la-di-da coming from Disney children trying to come back into relevance really trivializing what those of us who are bi/pans, have put up with all our lives? It’s like Cara-whats-her-face and her playing up “I like girls because I’m damaged, look how cool and edgy I am.” It seems like it’s become a trend. We’re young and hot, let’s make out with other ladies because why not? It makes me feel sick.

Maybe I’m misguided, maybe I’m getting old and jaded at the ripe age of 25. I just don’t feel like it’s helping our cause or the crappy stereotypes we face. I’d like to hear from another bi/pans person on this.

    • I’m bi, and it doesn’t bother me but I get what you’re saying. Those folks may not be talking about their sexuality in a way that you or I find appropriate/tasteful/whatever, but it’s still folks who are in the public eye that are both queer and visible. I think there are better ways of going about it, but I’d rather have famous folks who are visible AND queer than being queer and closeted. The sheer fact that they’re out allows us to open a discourse where we can educate others (both famous and not) what helps our community and what doesn’t. Know what I mean? Also, for the record, I don’t think Cara Delevingne (if indeed that’s the “Cara” you’re referring to) is out because she thinks it’s “edgy” or doing so because she’s “damaged”. If that were the case, she wouldn’t have taken Vogue UK to task for writing super insulting shit about her being bi in the first place.

    • Cosigned. I buy Cara Delevingne (or just never followed her closely enough to judge), but Demi and Miley’s vague ~love is fluid shtick does nothing for me.
