Straddlers of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and those who wish they were 12 years, 1 month ago-
Ha – I wondered where the post went! I really want to go to Taboo but have crutches, and I’m supposed to be taking them really seriously for at least two weeks. And when I was sitting back icing my foot, not using the crutches yet, it seemed completely reasonable that I could just get on with my life, no problem, the crutches were my friends BUT…[Read more]

:S doesn’t sound fun.. If nearby bars don’t work out then I have a Plan B which is, would you prefer to go to Jailhouse instead? If my memory serves me correctly that’s more of a bar, right? I wanted to check out both places at some point anyway, so we could go to Jailhouse first then Taboo when you’re crutch-less again, so you don’t miss out?
-
basically both are fine by me :)
-
OK! So I have been google earth-ing Taboo and, from scanning up and down the street, I can’t see any obvious bars right next door. SO, yes, let’s check out Jailhouse. There’s a kind of ricketty staircase up to it, but I think that’ll be ok – I can hop that far, I reckon. What time are you thinking? 8? 9?
-
Hey y’all… so I’m going on a family trip Sunday which means I’m not sure how late I can stay out on Sat night. If I can go, I’ll definitely come to Jailhouse :D
-
Coolio. Shall we say 9 at Jailhouse? I’ll be bringing along my straight-but-incredibly-enthusiastic-about-lesbians roommate (female), if that’s ok.
Michelle – do you want to message us your number so we can keep in touch more easily? -
Yes, 9 at Jailhouse! And Michelle, I think there’s a limit to how totally crazy I can go on one leg, so you can keep pace with me and then you’ll probably be fine for your family trip :) I’ll be bringing my apparently-straight-but-LOVES-lesbian-bars friend (also female), so I hope that’s ok, too!

Straddlers of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and those who wish they were 12 years, 1 month agooh NO, @mfjay @michelle – and anyone else in Taipei in for a film fieldtrip – I’ve just seen that Gigola is only playing in the evenings up until Friday, when the latest showing is 15.50. I can’t do Wednesday or Thursday or Friday at 15.50. Sooo, I think I might go tonight at 19.50? This is ridiculously short notice, I know, but if anyone else is…[Read more]

Straddlers of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and those who wish they were 12 years, 2 months ago@tascha, @shenan, @microwave : new Taipei meet up thread :)
So, sk has suggested Friday night at around 8.30/9pm, which definitely works for me :) could we poss meet at the nearest MRT station to where we want to go, because I’ve not been here too long and am pretty useless at finding places at the best of times… should be good!-
Yes! And yes, let’s meet at an MRT. Michelle, what’s the nearest one to this cute place we’re going to?
-
I apologize for this late reply– I actually can’t make it Friday :-/ Let me see if I can find the bar anyways.
-
But y’all have fun. I’m going to be in HK next week, but when I come back I hope we can still hang out =)
-
Hey, hope you’re having fun times in HK – are you back by Sunday by any chance? Cause, after a successful first taipei-straddlers meet up, ‘sk’ and I were thinking of going somewhere to eat, would be awesome if you could join us.
Also, I’ve just realised that Jailhouse is situated not too far from my house, so field trip at some point..? x
p.s.…[Read more]-
awesome. glad you guys had fun in taipei.
and totes down for a sunday meetup. would a lunch work?-
lunch would be great :)
-
Yes, lunch is fine with me. Also! You guys, lesbian film! In an actual cinema! French! Field trip, asap? http://www.spot.org.tw/etheater/ (Gigola)
-
Haha sorry I realise I should have written something a little more practical than just ‘lunch yay’ – shall we go to one of the veggie places that sk wrote about below? Lesbian film field trip = yes. I can do thurs or fri, but cause of class the earliest viewing I can make is 15.50.
-
Sure! Shall we meet at Taipower MRT, maybe, and then walk somewhere from there? The Happy Tomato place is a like a ten min walk – but there’s also so many other options, obvs. Does one/one thirty work?
-
HI FRIENDS! One o’clock at Taipower MRT sounds fabulous. Look for Chinese girl with glasses and a bob. And YES on movie!!!
-
awesome :) I’m embarrassingly pink after a day at the beach, really hoping it’ll calm down over night but if not.. then look out for a pink, embarrassed girl. x
-
Ok sorry this is last minute, but the station is really big. Let’s meet at Exit 1, just for clarity’s sake and we can figure out where to go from there. See you all soon!

Yes, all of the above – I also hope that you’re having fun in HK, and are maybe back by Sunday! :)
-

yeh of course michelle just let us know when you’re back :) sk, microwave, and anyone else for that matter – I’m still game if you are :)
-
Oh, Michelle, that’s a shame! But have fun in HK. I’m still in for Friday, though, yesss :) Um, there are quite a lot of open air bar places in Ximen that can be quite good, if it isn’t raining?
-
Sure, sounds good :) Ximen MRT at 9pm then?
-
Yes! Exit 6, inside the covered bit at the top of the escalator? In case it isn’t immediately obvious, by virtue of my being a foreigner who looks like she’s looking for someone etc, then I have brown hair and it’s kind of chin length. Also, can I interest you in jazz at Sappho afterwards? One of my friends knows someone who’s playing, and so some…[Read more]

Ok sounds good :) I’m short, with long dark brown hair and a fringe. Plus I’ll be the one walking around, looking confused and peering into the faces of foreigner women looking for a sign of recognition.. (if there are any major problems I’ll call you). Also totally up for jazz, Sappho etc :) see you tomorrow!

i’m in hk right now, so if anyone wants to PM me or reply here or whatevs, i’ll totally be up for some adventures. except i’m under 18 so unfortunately you probably don’t wanna drag me to any gay bars, but i could show you round some touristy places during the day or we could just go have lunch or whatever. if anyone’s up for that.…[Read more] -

Straddlers of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and those who wish they were 12 years, 2 months agoOh hay gay ladies of Taipei. I just got back to Taiwan from the states and will be around until next March. Unfortunately, since I’ve been studying in the states for the last 5 years I don’t have any queer friends around and none of my straight friends want to go lesbian/gay clubbing with me (boo).
Next Saturday, there’s a party going on at…[Read more]
-
loving the Taiwan/Taipei domination in the this group..! arriving in Taipei the week after that, so will miss the pj party but would be seriously interested in some lesbian/gay clubbing once I’m there :)
-
aw, to bad you can’t make it this week, though there’s a boi/androgynous girl beauty competition coming up in July. Woot.
-
hahaha, I made two straight friends accompany me to Taboo a few weeks back and I think they found it kind of, um, intense? I would totally be down for this, except I’m not free this Saturday. Damn. You go drink that Taboo beer with ice cubes and rock those pyjamas, though. And boi beauty competition? YES.
-
beer with ice cubes? what kind of travesty is this? haha actually a (straight) friend is visiting this weekend, so i might go to babe 18 instead (woot opening night party).
any chance you might be down for clubbing the following week? :D also, how would you describe the lesbian scene in taipei? *curious*
-
-
-
-
I’ve never been to Taboo before, to be honest, I rarely go clubbing even though I’m a college student lol.
-
Well there’s always a first for everything, right? :P
-
Right! But also, @microwave, tell us where you hang out instead? I definitely wouldn’t call Taboo my favourite place ever (by a really long way) – it was so extremely smokey and LOUD, we mainly hung out on the wall outside, and played with someone’s puppy.
-
well asked SK!
Apologies for my clubbing-obsession. Just finished my first year in college, and pretty sick of the frat scene by now.
-
Ha, no need to apologise – I don’t know much about the frat scene, but the way it is in my imagination isn’t ideal!
-
-
Me? Oh…well, I would go drinking sometimes in pubs (there are plenty in Ximending) I prefer a small comfortable pub to a nightclub. Or there are always some restaurants that serve endless servings of beer for a fee, those are pretty awesome too!
-
taiwaners – I’ve arrived! apparently there was some sort of pride thing happening tonight in Fresh, my (straight) roommate is bizarrely keen on exploring the lesbian scene here so we were gonna check it out, but decided we were both too tired tonight (arrived yest) and instead we are being lame and watching TV in our pjs… does anyone fancy Taboo…[Read more]
-
oh hey, welcome! Can’t believe you’ve been here a day and already know about a pride thing at Fresh; I have literally never even heard of it, good work! I have a friend’s leaving thing this weekend, but am totally up for Taboo – or maybe even one of microwave’s not-Taboo places – next week? Good luck with the jet lag in the meantime :)
-
hey guys! Taboo has a dress shirt party this saturday too– how does that sound for our taiwan straddler meet up? :) if anyone wants to grab drinks/chill anytime this week, i’m down too.
in the meantime, gotta go shopping for skinny ties…
-
Hey – sounds good, only thing is saturday is the day I move into my new place, so I can’t say for sure that I wouldn’t have to drop out due to some annoying moving-related reason.. what does dress shirt party mean anyway? :)
-
Yesss, I can do Saturday! But could also do other days, too, mfjay, if you want to concentrate on the move in? Either way, what do you guys think about maybe meeting somewhere else first, just so we can, like, hear each other’s real names before we hit up the other stuff? (Does dress shirt just mean shirt? I think it just means shirt. I looked at…[Read more]

I totally second what sk said. especially meeting elsewhere first. (less loud music? more space to talk? cheaper alcohol? :)
dress shirt = button down = cheaper admission.
yay i’m actually really stoked. =D /finally/ exploring the gay scene in taiwan.
-
It should be good! But also, I just matched dates to a calendar, and looked at something other than just the picture of a shirt with a bowtie, and the poster I thought was this poster says it’s on Sunday from 1pm – 7pm? And this seems like a really crazy time to hold an event in an underground nightclub – am I just accidentally looking at the…[Read more]

Yeah I looked it up and saw those times too.. confused..! Can anyone else shed some light on that?
But totally up for meeting up regardless of dress shirt parties.. any suggestions of bars to go to if we want a slightly quieter start to the evening? Saturday aside, I’m free basically any other night apart from this Fri :)-
Ok. Looked at it… Since it’s a “summer” party, I guess it’s like a pool party… without a pool?
If it’s in the afternoon… not sure if I can make it until say 5 or 6. Should we make a raincheck and postpone until next week? As for bars, my friends and I found a cute bar in 東區 (where bars are plenty!) with around 100nt drinks, dice, dar…[Read more]

Next week works for me – I should be able to do any night. Looking forward to meeting you guys! :)
-
Sure, let’s do next week. Could you guys do Friday, rather than Saturday, though? And a cute bar with 100nt drinks sounds great, let’s do that! What’s it called?
-
(Oh right, yeah, and I meant to say: I can also do basically any night other than Saturday and Tuesday, so it doesn’t have to be Friday…)
-
Oh, totally forgot that I can’t do Thursday evening – I’m going to see Harry Potter.. yes I’m cool.
(yay! I have internet!)-
Ha, great news on both counts! SO, shall we just say Friday for definite? At a time like maybe 8.30 or 9, in the place michelle was suggesting? Hey sk! I’m also in Taipei and currently doing a month-long stint in vegetarianism. Got any good vegetarian restaurant recommendations? :)

oh wow, so many! I feel like Taipei is basically the best conceivable place to eat things if you are a vegetarian. hang on, I will try to come up with some kind of shortlist…
-
OK! Eating places! I’m a massive fan of the weigh-your-plate Buddhist places. You know the ones I mean? I feel like once you start noticing them, you notice that they’re literally everywhere. I don’t know where you’re based, but there’s a super extensive one in Shida, on Heping just opposite the MTC. And there’s one in the food court of Q Square,…[Read more]

Also, there are so many other places. Probably you should join the facebook group Veggie Friendly Taipei? Anastasia knows so much more than me…

Straddlers of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and those who wish they were 12 years, 3 months agoFavorite queer asian movies? Mine are Saving Face and Spider Lilies :)
-
I’ve never seen any. Can I ask where you’ve seen them? Can I get them from a video store or watch them online?
-
Saving Face – http://www.movshare.net/video/drinkw9t3rd5x
Spider Lilies – http://entertainment.tipidtrip.com/all-movies/chinese-movie-spider-lilies/
I’m not sure whether they come with subtitles but Saving Face is in English with some Mandarin and Spider Lilies is in Mandarin with some scenes in Japanese :)-
you rock my socks! Thankyou *prays for subs*

OK I just checked the second link a little and it has wrong subtitles annoyingly everywhere… but if you have a torrent client you can find them on isohunt as well. Hope you like them :)

Saving Face is also a personal favorite of mine!!
-
isn’t it hilarious? :D i have tried showing it to friends of mine but unless they are chinese they don’t get 90% of the humor. sadly most of my friends are not chinese
-
Ha!! I recommended this film to my straight friends, they also loved it! I am half (if that’s possible) Chinese-American.
Now you have one more Chinese friend (me!) than before. ; )

oh! I love this question, I’m so happy this thread exists. There’s a Taiwanese four part film called Panda Candy (or maybe collection of four shortish films – they aren’t really connected), I think it’s available on Tudou. I really liked it.
Also, YES, Saving Face, and the start of Spider Lilies, with the green wig.
-
Also, it isn’t queer but in Suzhou River a girl dresses up as a mermaid and swims around in a mermaid tank, so can I mention that here, too?
-
Hahaha really? That’s awesome. I haven’t seen Panda Candy, will have to check that out. I also saw a Taiwanese movie called Drifting Flowers but the storylines as far as I recall were kind of fuzzy. But I watched that a few years back. Maybe I should watch it again.
-
-
Is it Candy Rain? (if my recollections are correct)
-
Oh! Yes, some quick googling reveals that your recollections are totally right, thanks! I think maybe I mashed up the title with The Panda Candy? Which is also gay and Chinese, but which I haven’t seen. But once I tried to see it, and so the name was all up in my head…
-
I don’t know either of those but I spent like, an hour trying to find streaming version of panda candy and no success :( it is HARD to find Asian films in America! (or maybe I just don’t know where to look??)
-
: D I watched Candy Rain!! It is very pretty to look at, but… the stories were kinda…strange.
-
Agreed. On the strangeness. And the pretty to look at. It was few years ago now, but I think I remember being impressed by the one with the girl and the cups of coffee and the light up bed? And least impressed by the one where everyone turned into comicbook characters in a bookshop? But idk, I think maybe I’m more tolerant of that stuff now, so…[Read more]

Haha.. what the heck was up with the 4th story? I agree, the coffee story was the best written imo. I saw Blue Gate Crossing today, it’s cute and very innocent. A little slowly paced and I thought Yue-zhen was incredibly ridiculous/borderline creepystalker/what my mom would call “shen jing bing” but overall the movie made me smile. Hey, I’m really sorry but despite my optimistic pick-your-day thing, I’m actually not free tomorrow anymore! What about maybe going for a drink or something on Wednesday?
oh no, OK, back again: it turns out I’m going to be caught up with a work project next week. I’m around Monday but, aside from that, how does anyone feel about planning relatively far ahead and picking a day the week after next? Basically, any day from the 26th September onwards?
