Glee’s Santana Is A Confirmed Lesbian, Kurt & Blaine Do Prom

I’ve got good news and bad news. The bad news is that Glee is on hiatus for the next four weeks and will return mid-April. The good news is that yesterday was Glee day at PaleyFest, the annual event where television writers and actors gather panel-style to chat about their wondrous contribution to pop culture. Much like Comic-Con, tons of spoilers and casting info comes out of the fest and boy did this one not disappoint.

Let’s cut right to the chase. Santana is officially 100% gay, as told exclusively to AfterEllen:

“Santana is now out, internally. Whether she’s dating somebody or not, we don’t know. But we think we’ve made a big step in giving the world that character. Whether her and Brittany will work out we don’t know. (Lesbian visibility) was our intention. We want to make sure everybody is included. Santana is a lesbian. She might not be ready to come out yet, but she is.”

Writers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk explained that while they love the Brittana dynamic (and who doesn’t?), the focus will now be Santana’s solo journey as she comes to terms with her sexuality. I actually think they are on the right track with this one — by having Santana deal with her identity independent from a relationship, it will probably come off as less of a gimmick and treated more seriously.

“A lot of people are very interested in that relationship. We now have a major character on one of the top shows on TV who is a lesbian. Whether she’s dating someone or not is not really what we’re getting at just yet. What we’re trying to do is explore that character and what it means to be that character. We’ll use Brittany as part of it, but we’re more interested in seeing who Santana is and how hard it is for her to accept who she is. That doesn’t mean they’re not gonna be together, but we’re more interested in the individual part of that relationship.”

AE also got a hold of Chris Colfer and he has a few ideas that could change the perception that gay men and lesbians operate on different planes: “They’re both very bitchy characters so I feel like they could bond. Maybe Kurt could teach her to be a little bit nicer — and a little bit more out.” Elsewhere, on the Kurt and Blaine front, there is sure to be some Klaine (is that a thing now?) angst when Kurt returns to McKinley High and the two fight to attend prom together. That’s awesome, but will it top Justin & Brian’s “Save the Last Dance For Me?”

Ya’ll up for some more Glee spoilers?  Good.

Close your eyes, ears and other portals if you wish to remain pure:

+ The “Born This Way” episode focuses primarily on the Karofsky bullying storyline.

+ Gwyneth will be back after the current four-week hiatus and hopefully again in season 3, adding that, “Gwyneth is sort of the muse of the show. I’m friendly with her. And Brad has become quite friendly with her. She’s also somebody who I write on the weekends and say, ‘What do you think about this for an episode even if you’re not in it?’ She has opinions. She’s great.”

+ Murphy says the show’s creators have long wanted to do an episode devoted to an album as opposed to an artist, and their wish has come true: Glee has been granted the rights to Fleetwood Mac’s epic record, Rumors.

+ Kristin Chenoweth returns later this season performing the original song , “It’s 10 am, I’m Drunk.” (She returns to pester Mr. Shu after her all-Caucasian production of The Wiz crashed and burned and she’s now performing in a one-woman show called Crossroads.)

Hey, what ever happened to Anne Hathaway guest starring as Kurt’s lesbian aunt?

  1. 1. that’s one of my favorite tv scenes of all time (queer as folk)

    2. i am really excited for this storyline in a way i haven’t been about any others b/c i feel like i relate so hard to santana. except that i’m old

    • The fact that your icon is stormtrooper makes me love you. I want a stormtrooper for a butler. #random

    • YAY the feelings!

My favourite QAF (US) moment ever is when the boys went to save Emmett from the freaky religious gay reformists and Teddy gives that speech about how God appreciates Emmetts Liza Minelli impression more than anyone cos that’s just how god made him. The feelings! *tear*

    exactly.

and yeah, what did happen to kurt’s gay aunt?

    • Some interview from PaleyFest revealed that she’s busy filming movies right now. It’s unlikely that she’ll make it for the end of the season, but is a probable for next season.

  3. The moments santana has with brittany are some of the most real moments this show has created. and i give a lot of the credit to naya’s acting chops.

yes, i think for the first god damn time the writers are on the right track. santana needs to sort her shit, and brittany needs to clue in to life in general. and a kurt/santana friendship would be perfect.

  4. Let’s be honest here. -Nothing- will ever be as good as Brian and Justin at the prom. Nothing ever.

  6. Goooood neeewwwwwsssss. I am so excited. Glee, possibly doing it right again! Lesbian Santana storyline I cannot possibly wait!!! If she doesn’t sing a T&S song the world will be incomplete.
Klaine prom should be interesting as well, interesting to see prom struggles have crept into pop culture. I hope they do it well.

Also Fleetwood Mac episode…Oh baby. :D

  7. Not that I’m complaining about Santana being a Lesbian, I’d been hoping for a Lesbian character because it seems like we often get left in the dust as far as pop culture goes. Gay males get the spotlight there and we become invisible to society.

I’m just wondering…where’s the love for our bi-sexual men and women? I know many and they get left out in the cold even more than we do when it comes to pop culture…I just figured they would make Santana bi, not gay. It isn’t the development I expected.

    • Brittany seems pretty solidly bisexual. She’s been shown to be not just sexually, but also emotionally attached to Artie in a way that Santana has never been to any of the boys she’s been involved with. Of course, it’s always possible the writers will ret-con her as either straight or gay. I hope not though. It would, however, be nice if they would spend some time on Brittany too, because it does seem like the writers think coming out as gay/lesbian is more important than coming to terms with being bisexual. But, for me at least, they’ve earned some faith and goodwill with these past few episodes, so I will watch and hope they deal as sensitively and seriously with Brittany as they seem to be doing with Santana.

      • I suppose you are right there, I suppose I tend to write Brittany off more than I should as a character. I tend to see her more as comedic relief sometimes than a real character with real emotions and goals. I feel like she is a bit of a malleable character for the writer’s, she’s their to play whatever role the other, more fleshed out, characters can’t.

Her bisexuality seems more a foil for Santana’s coming out at this point than it does a legitimate part of her own sexuality, but that’s just my opinion. I can read to much into things at times

        • No, I think you’re right about Brittany being little more than comic relief at this point. However, I think Santana was pretty much a one-off character until recently. There’s always hope that they’ll flesh out Brittany too in the near future. I wish they’d spend time fleshing out *all* the characters, to be honest, because most of them have very little personality/inner life. Mercedes, Tina, Lauren… But, um, that probably doesn’t bode well for Brittany…

    • Personally, I think that Brittany’s bisexual, since she’s the one who’s got a perfect track record of kissing everyone in the school. She also admitted to being in love with Artie even when Santana was pouring her heart out to her, which makes me think that her relationship with Artie is pretty meaningful to her, even though she’s perfectly willing to “get her cuddle on” with Santana while still with Artie. What I find troubling about Brittany being bi is that this seems to confirm the stereotype that bisexuals are promiscuous and/or unfaithful, which really sucks.

Also, there are a few bisexual ladies on television, although off the top of my head I can’t think of a bisexual man. There’s Callie from Grey’s Anatomy, Thirteen from House, and Marissa and Alex from The O.C. It’s true though that usually the bisexuals end up being paired with people of the opposite gender, which makes people think that the whole gay storyline was a ploy for ratings.

    • I agree with you. I was sort of hoping Santana would be bi since there’s rarely ever real representation for them, but like the conductress said, Brittany IS bi. Santana has never seemed to be emotionally attached to anyone except Brittany, while Brittany has been shown to be emotionally involved with Santana and Artie. Brittany is a little dense, but at least that means she’s honest. So I accept her as the bi character. I just hope they don’t try to pigeon hole her character into one or the other. It wouldn’t even match her personality.

    • Speaking of gays invisible to society, I love that we now have a queer lady of color front and center!

And yes, please, T&S, dear God.

  9. is Santana my life story? at any rate she’s further along her path than I am. I’m all of a sudden very interested in how this will all end up. Go Santana!

And I like that they’re not going to force Brittana. I personally like them better as close bffls, not intimate partners. Let Santana figure out who she is independent of a convoluted best friend/lover relationship.

    • THIS.
I thought I would kill to have Brittana, but I actually really love Santana The Lesbian independent of Brittany way better. I think really what I wanted was some recognition of what was going on and now that they’ve given it to us I am just interested to see what happens with Santana from here.

  10. Am I the only one who’s VERY INTERESTED in the Rumors thing/has a huge hard-on for Fleetwood Mac (read: Stevie Nicks)?

  11. I’m looking forward to hearing “It’s 10 am,I’m Drunk”. It’s a definite possibility that I may relate more to the song title than any of the Glee characters.

  12. One of my favorite story lines in Glee. Santana is beautifully conflicted – a character with depth – something increasingly rare on tv.

Love the Kurt character. If I was a gay boy would totally fall in love with him. Blaine doesn’t do much for me though, doesn’t seem good enough for Kurt.

….put me down as loving Fleetwood Mac (Stevie Nicks). I could listen to Landside all night long.

  13. I’m delurking for this. Yes.
Santana made me cry, that’s how happy/sad I was with that episode. I’m thrilled that she’s becoming more than the one note bitchy character. Right on!

Also, I squeeeed when I read about the continuation of the Karofsky story line. That’s been one of my favorites, because it’s honest and painful. I want him to be ok, and I want Kurt to be ok.

Also, who loves Kurt’s dad? Because I do.

    • Count me down for loving Kurt’s Dad. He’s so sweet and protective of Kurt. There are times I want to reach into the screen and hug him. Definitely a model for the supportive parent of a gay child.

  14. 1. I doubt anything could come close to beating Justin and Brian at prom on QAF…favorite scene of all time…but I’m sure they’ll try their hardest.

    2. This last episode made me beyond happy and I am pretty sad that I’ve got to wait this long till the next.

  15. I was losing interest in Glee, and ow I am back to the devoted fold. Santana was my favorite from day one and it just blows my mind that Fox is making a witty, beautiful, popular character a legitimate lesbian. Also, her speech to Brittany about walking around being a bitch all the time because she was angry resonated with me on a unexpectedly deep level. I spent most of my early years being a bitch because there was something missing in my life that made me different from everyone else and I loathed myself for it.

  16. wow! i love glee and i have always loved santana!!!<3 im a young bixesual and i was always angry at everyone.. but the whole time i was angry at myself for hiding for so long!!! having to hide your relationship is tough and now that i dont have too im a whole diffrent puerson..AND I LOVE IT!!!;)

  17. What’s that episode where one finds out that she is gay and what is it for an episode where she beats Finn
