Famous Autostraddlers Will Host Queer Ladies Speed-Dating at Strand

Once upon a time, Strand Bookstore hosted a Queer Ladies Speed-Dating event, and it was predictably awesome. That’s because it’s a proven fact that when you combine queer ladies, good books, and free wine, things cannot be bad. So what would you do if I told you that Queer Ladies Speed Dating is happening again, only this time, it’s going to be even better? You would say, “How?! How can it possibly get any better?”

Drumroll, please.

Autostraddle’s very own Gabby Rivera and Carly Usdin will MC Queer Ladies Speed-Dating at the Strand on August 15, which is exactly six days away. Start planning your outfit and winking at yourself in the mirror to inspire confidence, because Carly told me that while the plan for the evening is currently top secret, it is guaranteed to be awesome.

Maybe Gabby will read poetry and Carly will spin tunes. Maybe they’ll make jokes. Anything could happen!

Queer females of all ages and identifications are welcome, and the Strand website promises the event is “THE best place in town to meet other ladies if you’re new to the city, are looking to build your queer circle, or just want that final summer fling.” (That final summer fling!) Plus, you guys: Gabby and Carly will be there. Hosting. Did you know that Gabby co-ran a “Picking Up Chicks” workshop at A-Camp and Carly is one half of the cutest couple ever? I know. These guys are experts. I want to go and I’m not even single.

Queer Ladies Speed-Dating at the Strand will take place on Wednesday, August 15 from 7pm-8:30pm. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 day of event, and are available for purchase here. Strand Bookstore is located at 828 Broadway; the event will be held in the 3rd floor Rare Book Room. Remember: there will be free wine.

  1. I *almost* wish I was single JUST so I could go to this event. A bookshop seems like the perfect place for speed dating given that books are are my favorite things ever (although they share that top spot with lingerie… and other queer ladies. It’s crowded up there at the top).

  2. Can taken lesbians go to drink wine and look at books too? Maybe try to stop the daters from running out to rent uhauls later?

    • Ha! Yes, ladies who aren’t looking for a date can come by for the wine, the books, and new friends!

  3. I went last time, and I just registered to go again! 2 points for finding love at The Strand!

  4. More sadness about no longer living in NYC. Nothing this cool would ever happen in LA. For starters, we would need a real bookstore. :(

  5. I wish I could go! I live in Michigan…which is close by, but not close enough…I so would have saved up to go if I would have known about this sooner. If it happens again I am so in!

    • try to find a local bookstore that would?? i have no idea what your neighborhood is like but i know strand is repeating this because it was so successful the first time, so maybe if you could gather enough of a crowd a bookstore near you would bite!

i bet carly & gabby would skype in to host ;)

  6. wait, so does this mean no one’s gonna be there? —sads—

also, V please where one of your purrttyy flower dresses. that is a request and a command.

  7. omg – wear – i think i get a freebie cuz I just got out of the dentist and am still numb. right? freebie.

    • this actually does indeed sound cool. what are you seeing? fun fact: the first girl i ever fell for works at the public theater.

  8. I was going to go then I agreed to going on a vacay with a girl I’m dating/didn’t say I was exclusive due too much feelings & commitment issues but it is going to work out after therapy (????)…..

  9. The Strand is one of my favourite places in the world. I’m going to cry because I won’t be home till the following Sunday morning.

    Can this please happen again?

  10. I was so sad that I missed the first one because I was on vacation, but I’m so happy now because there’s going to be another one! <3

  11. I want to go! But even though I’m in NY, all my queer buddies are married/in some sort of weird limbo with a chick that does not allow them to pursue other women or be happy … I probably need more friends :(

  12. i had the best time! i started off a little tipsy so i think i made a fool of myself early, but it wouldnt be me if i didnt. chatted with a few cuties as well.
