5 Good Reasons to Watch ‘Lost Girl’ Tonight

Lost Girlis a television show that is popular among girls who like girls and the supernatural. In fact it is so popular that the majority of you have probably already watched an episode or ten on your Canadian television sets or by totally legal means via the internet. But for those of you who haven’t, we have good news: Lost Girl premieres in the US on the Syfy channel tonight, and we don’t want you to miss out. Here’s the gist:

“Lost Girl follows supernatural seductress, Bo (Anna Silk) as she discovers that she is one of the Fae, creatures of legend and folklore, who pass as humans but are far from it. Brought up by strict adoptive parents she didn’t know what she was – until she accidentally killed her first lover. In trying to understand her powers, she gets entangled in a love triangle between the shape-shifting detective Dyson (Kris Holdenreid) and human doctor Lauren (Zoie Palmer).”

And here’s the trailer:

Five Good Reasons to Tune In

Reason #1: Storyline
Lost Girl features a randy supernatural bisexual succubus and a hot (human) lesbian doctor. It also includes super cute sidekick and Hot Topic postergirl Kenzi, who is not mentioned above but should be ‘cause she features in almost every scene.

Reason #2: Girl-on-Girl Hotness

Bo is hot and Dr Lauren is hot and their interactions are hot. Much of the drama in this supernatural crime drama is girl-on-girl drama, which is by far the best kind when fictional characters are involved.

Reason #3: Banter
Bo and Kenzi’s half witty, half cheeseball dialogue reminds me of the Gilmore Girl’s machine gun repartee, which most of the population found insufferable but which I found totally endearing.

Kenzi: What are you doing? Do we have plans? Do I have time to get changed?
Bo: I have plans. I have a doctor’s appointment tonight.
Kenzi: In a push-up bra and sexy boots at this hour? Um newsflash, I don’t think they’re a real doctor.

Reason #4: Girls Look Good in Leather

Do you like girls who like leather? Well lucky you! The ladies of Lost Girl wear leather and tank tops almost exclusively. Every character’s wardrobe is BADASS.

Reason #5: Fearless Emotional Investment
Although the first season of Lost Girl premieres in the US this week, a third season has just been announced. This means you can wholeheartedly invest in Bo and Dr Hotpant’s relationship with little fear that they’ll be ripped from your life by television executives in the near future.

There are plenty of other reasons to tune in, but I think I’ve covered the most important ones. Are you going to watch the premiere tonight? Or are you already a card-carrying member of Team Lauren?

  1. One of the best shows on television right now and such a refreshing portrayal of lesbian relationships and female sexuality. Zoie Palmer and Anna Silk have one of the best chemistry I’ve seen on a show in years. They not only sizzle, they are also heart wrenching and romantic, wait till season 2 and you’ll know what I mean.

  2. I like the show a lot, most Buffy-ish thing on telly since, well, Buffy. It definitely stands on its own merits though, particularly the central female friendship, adult tone and humour, and general kickassery.

I still don’t get the adulation for Lauren, who I think is a weak character, but I am happy to sit here alone waiting for someone to agree with me, probably forever.

  3. Haven’t seen the show yet (I’m a bad Canadian), but it’s one of many on my to-watch list, this year. I’m happy to see another Canadian show getting love across the globe.

  4. Maybe this will fill the hole in my soul that opened up when Buffy went off the air. Thanks, Autostraddle!

  5. Ohh I am def watching and recording this (I tend to flip when shows are on at that moment):D in HD too:D I swear in general I have so many tv shows tonight to watch and I normally am not a tv person..

  6. Anna Silk is reason enough to watch anything – I can’t really concentrate on plot points when she’s speaking… Which sort of makes the show hard to watch. If you care. About plot. Or what she’s saying.

  7. “Bo is hot and Dr Lauren is hot and their interactions are hot.”

I like sci-fi and fantasy shows in general but that line right there about sums up why this show rocketed up to the top of my favourite shows list, shortly after its premiere in Canada.

What made me watch it in the first place was stumbling upon the original Canadian promo for it on Youtube. Waay better than the SyFy version:

I was sold from the first 7 seconds into the Showcase promo, especially the first 3! Then I saw the Morrigan 17 seconds in, then the hot kiss with Bo and Dyson. And that cemented it for me. Also, I thought the music was badass and worked with the clip better. To think I didn’t even know then that she was bi!

  8. Man, Lost Girl is balls.

I watched the first episode with my dad cause the trailer looked awesome. I had high hopes in the beginning with the cute blonde who turned out to be super irritating (and also not blonde)and the writing was so bad, and I didn’t much like the plot, and we both agreed on it’s ballsness and laughed in hearty disbelief at the rest of the episode.

I liked Doctor Cute, but I haven’t watched it since cause I tend to build a substantial resentment towards shows I only watch for potential lesbian plots.

    • I so agree with you, Ailia! My girlfriend kind of likes the show, she watches it sometimes, but I find it quite bad… I agree as well with the fact that I always end up being mad at myself for only expecting something remotely lesbiany to happen and not giving a damn about the rest, when the rest is so lame.

  9. Kenzi is my favorite. Usually the sidekick winds up being annoying and is always getting themselves in shit and needing to be saved. She manages to hold her own while still being hilarious. Kenzi and Bo have one of the most flushed out female friendships on television right now.

  10. A couple more reasons to watch Lost Girl:

    6) Bo’s cleavage. As Anna Silk says, “the Bo cleavage is pretty epic.” Epic is an understatement! You could lose a person in it… in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Atlantis was down there somewhere. The wardrobe department definitely know how to maximise Anna Silk’s assets.

    7) No labels or sexuality drama. This is one of my favourite things about the show. No one questions their sexuality, there’s no angst about labels, no “ZOMG am I gay/bi?”, no coming out of the closet crap, and no one bats an eyelid at the fact that Bo sleeps with guys and girls. Why can’t the real world be like this?

    and last but not least:
    8) Zoie Palmer. Not only does she possess a fine set of phalanges and look great in a lab coat, she also has a wicked sense of humour. Check out this video of last year’s Fan Expo to see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9DD2Ct6fWc . Most importantly, she makes Lauren a real, believable lesbian, the type you wish you could meet down at your local top-secret lab facility. Now all I need is for Zoie to be single, gay, and interested in a relationship with a loopy Lost Girl fan and she’d be perfect! ;)

My name is girlwithglasses and I am a Lost Girl addict.

  11. I set the dvr a couple weeks ago to make sure I didn’t miss it, but gilmore girl levels of banter make me so much more excited for it

    • Oh I didn’t like the Girlmore Girls banter though. :( Is it really like the Gilmore Girls banter?

      • It’s not overly similar. Bo and Kenzi speak just as fast but are possibly funnier and less annoying.

  12. Spoiler: Season 2 sucks because of the matter-of-fact dyson/bo/lauren love triangle, I’m currently only watching for the great Kenziness of it. I fucking love Kenzi, I feel she doesn’t get enough love.

    • ? Did you get the seasons mixed up? Lauren wasn’t a real factor in the supposed ‘triangle’ until a few episodes into season 2. Hell I stopped watching season 1 after the tenth episode because I was sick of Lauren only getting 1-2 minutes of screentime per episode and constantly being reminded that Bo/Dyson is endgame.

Kris (guy who plays Dyson) even said that Lauren was originally only meant to be a temporary wedge between them, and that was changed only because of ZP’s incredible popularity.

In terms of lesbian content S2>S1. Especially once you factor in SPOILER

      Lauren’s recently awoken girlfriend.

      END SPOILER

  13. I can’t believe I almost forgot to watch this. Thank you so much for the heads up or I would have. I’ll admit it, I made a little girly noise when Kenzi started speaking Russian. I hadn’t heard of the show before Syfy, but I love it already, and it’s a welcome break from the brain bubbling rhetoric of the Republican Primary debate.

  14. I HAVE BEEN WONDERING WHEN LOST GIRL WOULD SHOW UP ON AS. I’M YELLING BECAUSE I’M EXCITED. PEOPLE SHOULD REALLY WATCH THIS SHOW, IT’S REALLY GOOD OKAY, I’M SERIOUS JUST WATCH IT

    I’M SHOUTING

  15. Can we just go back to dreamy about.. I mean talking about Anna Silk in the rest of the comments? I’m sure the concept of Lost Girl isn’t the greatest – but put her in leather and who in their right minds can focus on anything else?

  16. Am I the only one who has noticed Dyson’s VERY similar Sara Quin “Letter E with an extra line, in a box” tattoo? It’s on his shoulder, while her’s is on her arm.

Of course, I seem to be able to find a T&S link to everything. It’s a sickness. :)
