Art Director

Full-time exempt, Remote

We’re looking for an experienced and innovative graphic designer to join our team and lead all things visual for our thriving LGBTQ+ community.

This role is ideal for an ambitious creative interested in executing projects across multiple fields and formats. This job has everything: gay t-shirts, tissue paper for A+ subscription boxes, infographics, in-house ads for holiday merch sales, Instagram stories, Canva brand kits, event signage, and many other beautiful places where your designs will shine.

Qualified candidates will have experience working with Adobe CS and UI programs like Figma.

You will be primarily working remotely, and we are interested in applicants from anywhere in the United States. Your work will be largely self-directed and self-managed, working proactively to identify and solve problems and sort through competing priorities.

The role of Art Director currently spans three distinct areas of the company: Website, Merchandise, and Instagram. We’re aiming to eventually hire a Social Media Director, so the Instagram-related aspect of your position is temporary.

Website responsibilities include:

  • Working with editors to translate their vision into visuals for content across all platforms: feature graphics, social imagery, dividers, in-article pictures (this will also include sourcing and directing outside illustrators and designers as necessary).
  • Creating branding for various content series.
  • Designing the look and feel for fundraising campaigns, A+ membership drives and other Autostraddle celebrations.
  • Working with our tech team to design and implement new or updated website features and layouts forAutostraddle.
  • Creating easy-to-use templates for editors.
  • Working with the Ad Director to deliver punchy proposals, display ads and social images for brands.
  • Working with the Fundraising/A+ Director to develop enticing graphics that encourage donations or membership sign-ups.

Merchandise responsibilities include:

  • Brainstorming and conceptualizing new merch ideas, both independently and with the team.
  • Sourcing and art directing outside designers, or doing your own design work, to bring merch ideas into reality.
  • Corresponding with printers to get estimates, craft orders, create print-ready art files and payment processes.
  • Tracking data on sales, inventory and orders.
  • Creating marketing materials around new merch and sales: writing posts, creating sales graphics and social campaigns.
  • Maintaining the Autostraddle Store by regularly organizing the storefront, keeping inventory updated, and determining necessary discount schedules.

Instagram responsibilities include:

  • Identifying new and legacy content that will do well on the platform.
  • Creating graphics and images specific to the platform.
  • Overseeing a regular schedule of Instagram activity, both on the grid and in stories.
  • Crafting post copy, and boosting the signal of a post through hashtags, tagging, and cross-posting on Facebook if necessary.
  • Ensuring the health of our algorithm by engaging with comments, maintaining our schedule, and reposting stories.

About Working at Autostraddle:

Founded by a group of friends using a queen bed as a desk in a cramped Morningside Heights apartment, Autostraddle has since grown to a leading media company financed primarily by the support of our passionate community of readers. We are dedicated to creating stable and supportive opportunities for employment, contract work and self-expression for LGBTQIA+ people. Aside from our annual staff retreat, our office is entirely remote with a full-time team of 9 employees, as well as numerous part-time and freelance workers.

You are largely able to set your own hours with the expectation that they will overlap with required meetings and the hours of other team members as much as possible.

Compensation:

  • $70k/year starting salary
  • Medical, dental and vision insurance for employee and dependents
  • 401(k) after six months of employment
  • Unlimited PTO
