Team Pick: Ellen Page On Ellen DeGeneres Is as Heartwarming as It Gets

Do you know who’s great and also gay? Trick question, I was thinking of TWO people: Ellen Page and Ellen DeGeneres. We’ve written before about how their coming out stories are related in more ways than just nominally, but in an interview that’s scheduled to air May 27, the two Ellens talked about what it means to come out in the spotlight and how they admire one another for their respective courage. It’s about as heartwarming as it gets.

Ellen Page says a lot of good words, including these words that are nice and that I like a whole lot:

I was so ready to (come out) and quite frankly so excited to do it, so it was a combination of just such thrill to finally be at that place in my life where I was able to do that. And [I was] grateful to have that moment and grateful to you because you did it at a time where it was much harder and much scarier

THIS IS A REALLY COOL CROSS-GENERATIONAL MOMENT, YOU SHOULD WATCH THE VIDEO.

  1. Not sure if I peed my pants a little because of the uncontained excitement, or came really hard.

  2. There is a gravity between them that you don’t often see with Ellen. A shared moment of understanding between two women that are power houses of their generation and you can see the reflected fear and shame between them as if there is no audience listening intently to every word. It’s wonderful.

  3. tears are a lovely, unexpected side effect of this video.
This and Robin Robert’s time on Ellen hopefully means there will be that much more queer time on day time :)

  4. Most definitely the highlight of my week. So proud of both, and so happy to see them talking about it like this.

  5. It was wonderful to watch, I got all tingly just watching it. It brought back memories of the time I came out. It felt like the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders, and I’ve never been happier.

  6. Yay! I’ve been waiting for this ever since Ellen Page came out. This is awesome.

  7. So if Ellen congratulates me for coming out, I would burst into tears. And that video? Augh….

  8. In addtiont to all the feels I had to smile when I noticed that Ellens coffee table seems to be a big hunk of log! Looks like Alaskan furniture and I would know. LOL

  9. This was such a beautiful interview. I want to take this and show it to all the people who just don’t get how important coming out is. Whenever a celebrity comes out there are so many people who can’t wait to say it’s not a big deal because they “knew all along”. Or they think being openly queer doesn’t negatively effect entertainers any more. Sometimes I think people forget that these are real peoples lives we’re talking about. It took me so long to get to the place where I could come out and I can’t imagine having to do all that with the whole world watching. I have nothing but respect for both the Ellens and wish them the best in their careers.

  10. Is it just me, or does Ellen Page actually look different since she came out? Like she’s just so much more relaxed and it makes her whole face and body just look different.

    Also this was awesome.

    • Yes, she definitely seems more relaxed and confident now. She’s even more fun on Twitter these days. It’s like they say in the interview, no more worrying about people pointing at you as if they know you’re big secret. No more shame. I think a huge weight has been lifted off her shoulders and that’s why she seems so different.

  11. Eyegasm!!! My eyeballs was very wet…. with happy tears! :D
Disappointed that they didn’t kiss :( Ellen sometimes kisses her male guest but never the female ones. Babe, Y’know you want to. :D

  12. But for reals, the discussion on carrying shame and guilt caught in my heart.

  13. Just lovely! Their conversation really rang true for me…yes, coming out does feel like having a weight lifted off your shoulders. I know how that feels, and I’m so happy that Ellen Page is getting to experience that now too. She was so brave to come out so publicly and I hope seeing her will help people who are closeted right now.

  14. Ellen Page really called it out for me. When she said she thought she was happy and comfortable with herself as a gay woman but she only realized the guilt and shame she was holding on when she as finally out. Don’t I know it, girl.

  15. This is probably the best thing to happen in a talk show ever. Ever! Also, some weeping might have happened.
