I want to thank our senior editor, the one!! the only!!, Heather Hogan for covering our twice-a-week link roundup while I was away celebrating my birthday. But I am back, a year older and none wiser. Full of poolside reads and eating outside and sleeping in. I missed you!

Queer as in F*ck You

Brittney Griner’s trial in Russia on Friday, and yesterday — and July 4th — she released a letter to President Biden asking for directly for his help in her case. She’s been wrongfully detained by Russia for 138 days. Here’s more:

  1. It’s still wild to me to all the folks who now want to cancel 4th of July because of rights being stripped away from them. Yet us black and Brown folks have had those rights taken from us for decades/centuries. I wonder if someone can be written to about Brittany Griner, this is ridiculous. What protest can we have for her??? I wish there were concrete answers.

  2. thank you for the BG coverage and links. it feels like they keep bringing her out into public view because they want the spectacle to press the US gov’t for something; which makes me hope that Biden’s seeming indifference is a strategic way to get the Kremlin to work with the state department without having to free a terrorist. i want BG home, and i now think it will go better for her if it’s hard for Russia to disappear her.

i regret getting folks to stream Macy Gray stuff – i found her again a year ago. so tired of bigots claiming misunderstandings, but really seek a pass for their prejudice.

  3. I don’t know about Macy Gray or Ben Shapiro but I’m giving Bette Midler the benefit of the doubt. I’ve learned through the years that, despite appearances, sometimes things are not as they seem. To paint someone as transphobic simply because of one, possibly misunderstood, tweet is unfair.

  4. Re: Bette
One tweet about not wanting the word “woman” to be erased is not transphobic. Especially coming from someone who has been a strong ally of the queers for 60 odd years.
