The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 4 months agoCan we talk about the amazingness that is a Kindle? I’ve developed an unhealthy attachment to mine. Like, I get anxiety if I forget to take it with me when I go somewhere, even if I won’t be able to read it. I have about 45 books on it right now. Does anyone else have one? (or a Nook, or a E-Reader)

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoThis is great because I am skipping the June pick for my real-life bookclub, because it’s stupid chick lit
So I’m reading The Help instead, and I just finished Room (amazing)-
Emma Donoghue? I read about that book and it looked super interesting, and I have a book of her short stories sitting in my stack of unread books, so you’ve encouraged me to read that. yays

I also thought Room was amazing.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 4 months agoHi friends, I’m looking for a lesbian author of color, who has written fiction preferably. Does anyone have any recommendations? It’s for my book club, trying to diversify it a bit.

Felicia Luna Lemus (San Francisco!), Jewelle Gomez (vampires!), Mayra Lazara Dole (Miami! Coming Out!), Malinda Lo (fantasy without dragons!) and more listed here: http://zahrawithaz.livejournal.com/12471.html

Seconding the Jewelle Gomez and Malinda Lo recs! If I recall correctly, Octavia Butler was a lesbian (but even if I’m wrong, you should read her because she is awesome!). I don’t know if Nalo Hopkinson, who I am loving a lot right now, is a lesbian, but her book “The Salt Roads” does have significant lesbian content. One of the stories in…[Read more]

thanks guys! That will help a lot. I just suggested last night that next year we do all minority authors, and got treated with blank stares :( so my picks are going to be double minorities if I can help it :)

Word. I’m in love with mine. I’ve got about 120 books on it, mostly thanks to Project Gutenberg. I live in Asia, so the Kindle is really my only means of purchasing English language books. I’d be dying out here without it(or more likely: using the Internet A LOT more). I can’t always find the books I want on it(JD Salinger, get your dead self up…[Read more]
A friend from Malaysia says that if you set your address to the States, you can purchase more books. (Because of liscensing whatnots)
