Straddlers of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and those who wish they were 12 years, 4 months agoOh hay gay ladies of Taipei. I just got back to Taiwan from the states and will be around until next March. Unfortunately, since I’ve been studying in the states for the last 5 years I don’t have any queer friends around and none of my straight friends want to go lesbian/gay clubbing with me (boo).
Next Saturday, there’s a party going on at…[Read more]

loving the Taiwan/Taipei domination in the this group..! arriving in Taipei the week after that, so will miss the pj party but would be seriously interested in some lesbian/gay clubbing once I’m there :)
-
aw, to bad you can’t make it this week, though there’s a boi/androgynous girl beauty competition coming up in July. Woot.
-
hahaha, I made two straight friends accompany me to Taboo a few weeks back and I think they found it kind of, um, intense? I would totally be down for this, except I’m not free this Saturday. Damn. You go drink that Taboo beer with ice cubes and rock those pyjamas, though. And boi beauty competition? YES.
-
beer with ice cubes? what kind of travesty is this? haha actually a (straight) friend is visiting this weekend, so i might go to babe 18 instead (woot opening night party).
any chance you might be down for clubbing the following week? :D also, how would you describe the lesbian scene in taipei? *curious*
-
-
-
-
I’ve never been to Taboo before, to be honest, I rarely go clubbing even though I’m a college student lol.
-
Well there’s always a first for everything, right? :P
-
Right! But also, @microwave, tell us where you hang out instead? I definitely wouldn’t call Taboo my favourite place ever (by a really long way) – it was so extremely smokey and LOUD, we mainly hung out on the wall outside, and played with someone’s puppy.
-
well asked SK!
Apologies for my clubbing-obsession. Just finished my first year in college, and pretty sick of the frat scene by now.
-
Ha, no need to apologise – I don’t know much about the frat scene, but the way it is in my imagination isn’t ideal!
-
-
Me? Oh…well, I would go drinking sometimes in pubs (there are plenty in Ximending) I prefer a small comfortable pub to a nightclub. Or there are always some restaurants that serve endless servings of beer for a fee, those are pretty awesome too!
-
taiwaners – I’ve arrived! apparently there was some sort of pride thing happening tonight in Fresh, my (straight) roommate is bizarrely keen on exploring the lesbian scene here so we were gonna check it out, but decided we were both too tired tonight (arrived yest) and instead we are being lame and watching TV in our pjs… does anyone fancy Taboo…[Read more]
-
oh hey, welcome! Can’t believe you’ve been here a day and already know about a pride thing at Fresh; I have literally never even heard of it, good work! I have a friend’s leaving thing this weekend, but am totally up for Taboo – or maybe even one of microwave’s not-Taboo places – next week? Good luck with the jet lag in the meantime :)
-
hey guys! Taboo has a dress shirt party this saturday too– how does that sound for our taiwan straddler meet up? :) if anyone wants to grab drinks/chill anytime this week, i’m down too.
in the meantime, gotta go shopping for skinny ties…
-
Hey – sounds good, only thing is saturday is the day I move into my new place, so I can’t say for sure that I wouldn’t have to drop out due to some annoying moving-related reason.. what does dress shirt party mean anyway? :)
-
Yesss, I can do Saturday! But could also do other days, too, mfjay, if you want to concentrate on the move in? Either way, what do you guys think about maybe meeting somewhere else first, just so we can, like, hear each other’s real names before we hit up the other stuff? (Does dress shirt just mean shirt? I think it just means shirt. I looked at…[Read more]
-
I totally second what sk said. especially meeting elsewhere first. (less loud music? more space to talk? cheaper alcohol? :)
dress shirt = button down = cheaper admission.
yay i’m actually really stoked. =D /finally/ exploring the gay scene in taiwan.
-
It should be good! But also, I just matched dates to a calendar, and looked at something other than just the picture of a shirt with a bowtie, and the poster I thought was this poster says it’s on Sunday from 1pm – 7pm? And this seems like a really crazy time to hold an event in an underground nightclub – am I just accidentally looking at the…[Read more]
-
Yeah I looked it up and saw those times too.. confused..! Can anyone else shed some light on that?
But totally up for meeting up regardless of dress shirt parties.. any suggestions of bars to go to if we want a slightly quieter start to the evening? Saturday aside, I’m free basically any other night apart from this Fri :)-
Ok. Looked at it… Since it’s a “summer” party, I guess it’s like a pool party… without a pool?
If it’s in the afternoon… not sure if I can make it until say 5 or 6. Should we make a raincheck and postpone until next week? As for bars, my friends and I found a cute bar in 東區 (where bars are plenty!) with around 100nt drinks, dice, dar…[Read more]

Next week works for me – I should be able to do any night. Looking forward to meeting you guys! :)
-
Sure, let’s do next week. Could you guys do Friday, rather than Saturday, though? And a cute bar with 100nt drinks sounds great, let’s do that! What’s it called?
-
(Oh right, yeah, and I meant to say: I can also do basically any night other than Saturday and Tuesday, so it doesn’t have to be Friday…)
-
Oh, totally forgot that I can’t do Thursday evening – I’m going to see Harry Potter.. yes I’m cool.
(yay! I have internet!)-
Ha, great news on both counts! SO, shall we just say Friday for definite? At a time like maybe 8.30 or 9, in the place michelle was suggesting? (Those times are ballpark, feel free to modify.) @microwave, are you still here, or are you in Ukraine already? Also, we should probably start a new thread for this, because I’m not sure how much thinner…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoJust finished up Thr3e By Ted Dekker from yesterday. Full of plot twists, horror and just all around craziness. Although my least favorite part would have to be Kevin’s family background. This book is one you won’t want to put down and i highly recommend it to whoever hasn’t read it!

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoI just finished reading “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by Sherman Alexei (230 pages) after a friend recommended it to me (she’s reading her way through all the books that have won National Book Awards — previously, she read through all the Caldecott Medal winners, and I can usually trust her taste in books). It tells the story…[Read more]

Sherman Alexei is a fantatic writer, isn’t he? I love his work.
-
He is, indeed. And I have a particular fondness for any writer who can break my heart in one paragraph and make me laugh in the next. :) I’m adding all of his other books to my “to read” list.
-
-
My love for Sherman Alexie is HUGE. He is such a fantastic writer (and person in general). We were assigned the Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven, which is a collection of short stories that are all interrelated. I fell in love ever since. Also, this essay that he wrote this month is amazing, you should check it out!…[Read more]

He also writes, produces and directs films! ‘Smoke Signals’ was based on one of his short stories and introduced me to the fantastic Adam Beech. The Business of Fancydancing is just beautiful and has a gay protagonist.
-
I saw ‘Smoke Signals’ years and years ago and loved it! I would like to revisit it soon. :D
I will definitely have to check out The Business of Fancydancing, thanks!
