Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoI just finished The Famished Road by Ben Okri today and it was exactly 500 pages long! Overall, I liked the book. The beginning and end were fantastic but some of the middle was a bit slow. The book is essentially narrated by a “spirit-child” named Azaro who is reborn (reluctantly) as a human child but keeps his connections to the other world. He…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoI’m dragging my way through Revolutionary Road. It’s wonderfully written but terribly depressing and it’s so beautiful outside… #dilemmaeveryday
(PS: Did anyone even like Tootsie Rolls?)

revolutionary road is incredibly depressing. beautifully written but kinda makes you want to jump off a cliff. definetly a winter time read so that the weather matches the mood of th book but since you have already started i’d say just finish it. its worth it. i kinda of think of it like lolita very wrong and not heartwarming but written so well…[Read more]

Maybe it’s a good idea to read it in the summer though? If I get too melancholic I can just step outside.

a friend described Revolutionary Road as “it took more than it gave”, and ever since I’ve been a bit apprehensive to read it…
-
Your friend is probably right, but I must say the book also inspires reflexion like few novels do.

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 4 months agoHey guys! (@internrachel, @julia1)
I just finished reading Candy Girl by Diablo Cody.
I picked it up because 1. I am SO IN LOVE with Diablo Cody, 2. It’s about strippers, namely Diablo Cody being a stripper, and 3. Because my friend gave it to me and who doesn’t like free books?
Diablo Cody hails from my hometown of Minneapolis, and it was a…[Read more]-
This sounds cool, I think I’ll check it out.

that does sound good! – is it ok to read on public transport?..

I was fine, but I read Cunt by Inga Muscio on the train, so maybe I just have no fear. I mean, the worst that will happen is someone will say something disapproving and you’ll never see them again. But maybe someone’ll see it and be interested!
Either way, read it.

No no, I will read Y: The Last Man maybe.
That one was pretty good, but i never finished it. I’ll be interested in hearing how you liked it!
I cried really hard through, like, the last 3 issues.
you are not alone. i’ve got several series that i want to read/re-read this summer. so much graphic goodness. :)
DC girl all the way here! :) But I’m still waiting for DC to release Batwoman….
I am in the middle of re-reading Thor and Incredible Hercules, so definitely not!
Hell no! I have one of Ariel Schrag’s graphic novels in the mail to me right now, so I’ll definitely be posting about that in the next week or so. I’m also contemplating a full series reread of “Strangers in Paradise.”
make sure to post about it here when you read it! Which one did you get? Her stuff intrigues me, but i’ve never actually read a book of hers, only what’s online.
.
Have you ever read Fun Home?
No, I haven’t read Fun Home. That’s one of those I keep meaning to read, but somehow it always stays somewhere in the middle of my To Read list!
I’m getting “Potential: The Highschool Comic Chronicles of Ariel Schrag.” I saw it mentioned somewhere on Autostraddle, and I got really excited about it. Luckily, a copy of it was just posted on…[Read more]
