The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoI just picked up Inferno by Eileen Myles. Has anyone read it? I’m pretty excited, it has review blurbs on the back from John Waters and Alison Bechdel.
-
I haven’t read it yet, but Autostraddle did it for the first “Reading a F*cking Book Club,” which seems like a pretty good endorsement to me. I’ve been thinking about bumping it up to next on my reading list.
-
Oh jeez, I should have checked there first! I’m really enjoying it so far, I’m excited to read what the article says when I’m finished.
-
-
I read that for the AS book club, it is so good.

I had my first ever driving lesson yesterday, which is something I’ve been putting off for almost 6 months. I managed to speak at an audible level, and not break down in tears (which is something I do when I feel pressured/embarrassed) Emy 1: Crippling shyness 0. I felt like this would be the place to share this information..
-
good for you! you totally get points. lots of points.
-
well done! I hated driving lessons too, there’s something about being stuck with someone that you don’t know for an extended period of time. At least, I hated them until I moved and got a hotttt woman instructor with an awesome sense of humour. I was pretty bummed when I finally passed haha
-
I also have a lady-instructor mostly because I had the choice between her, and a guy who has an issue with being a bit handsy. And physical contact with a stranger is not something I can handle. I feel I made the right choice, she’s also really understanding, calm and generally really nice – like she reminds me to breathe (which is something I…[Read more]

Good for you, and yay on getting a nice instructor. I had a male instructor who just didn’t work well with me at all – he was really gruff and condescending. It went…uh…poorly. Very poorly.

My drivers test ended in tears…even though I (just barely) passed.

Hey, congrats. Little victories!

Any homebodies? *cough*hermits*ahem*
o/-
o/ — but i make an effort to be social when i can.
-
I have been known to refer to myself as a hermit or as having hermit-ish tendencies. I’m totally a homebody/loner, I generally like to be alone but I do make an effort to be social at times.
-
i would also confess to hermit-ish tendancies…
-
-
I think that’s how people view me because I always make up excuses to avoid invitations to do anything. I realize I am letting myself flounder with zero social capital, but I’m perfectly content doing my own thing and whenever I have to deal with awkward/bad social interactions, it bothers me. I don’t experience enough truly good social…[Read more]

I was like, “I’m not a homebody!” and then i realized that my pajamas were on at 2pm today. perhaps i should get an outdoor hobby.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoCurrently I’m reading “Breaking Dawn” because after a year of graduate school I needed something mindless. Next up is “Girls to the Front” to make up for my indiscretions.
-
Girls to the Front is so good, although I feel kind of guilty reading that some of the characterizations were problematic….
-
yeah, after reading it i’m feeling ambivalent towards the riot grrrl movement. i’m always going to love the music, its only ever been tied to me feeling empowered and generally great (grrreat?). a lot of the writing felt apologetic and biased in favor of the movement, which really annoys me. bias is only okay to me if the books is in first-person.…[Read more]

If you would like a fuller picture of 90s grrrl politics, may I recommend A Girl’s Guide to Taking Over the World? It’s a zine anthology with a ton of the big names, but the political and social spectrum is much wider than what was well-known in the “mainstream” riot grrrl community. It’s outta print, but cheap used and maybe you can interlibrary…[Read more]

oh cool, thanks! the ‘zines were one of the most interesting parts of ‘girls to the front’ and just a little before my time, i’m totally going to look into this!

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoI’m reading “How to Say Goodbye in Robot” right now on my kindle but the book literally on my nightstand is “The Book of Useless Information: Thousands of things you didn’t think you needed to know…and probably don’t.”

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 5 months agoAccording to her blog, Catherynne Valente’s new book ‘The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making’ debuted at number 8 on the NY Times Best Seller List! It totally deserves it too; it’s awesome. You should totally click on Autostraddle’s Amazon link and buy it!

I was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder a year and a half ago. Does anyone else here have it? How do you deal with it?
-
I was diagnosed two and a half years ago. At first I took meds for it but they made me feel like I was no longer alive so I stopped them. I also suffer from severe depression and the medication I am on for that has helped the anxiety.
When I get super nervous I usually put my hand on my heart or artery in my throat so I can feel my heartbeat.…[Read more]-

I’ve been diagnosed with that! Unfortunately, I’m not real good at dealing with it. I haven’t had a face-to-face conversation with someone I’m not related to me or a heal care professional for a few years now (small talk with various cashiers don’t count!). That’s mostly a product of my living situation, since I live way the hell out in the…[Read more]

i was diagnosed w/ clinical depression 10 years ago and w/in the last year had an additional diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (i worry abt EVERYTHING -can’t shut the busy brain off) and ADD. good times. medication is helping a bit, and talking to a therapist is vital for me.
-
I might be you, it’s undiagnosed but I’m pretty sure I have clinical depression, a generalized anxiety disorder, and ADD.

it’s like a tilt-a-whirl sometimes, don’cha think?

I’m not quite sure what a tilt-a-whirl is, but it sounds very fitting

it’s an amusement park ride. the cars spin as they’re moved in a circle. basically it feels like you’re being flung around and all you can do is hang on really tight to something *and by all that’s holy, beg it to stop spinning!* http://bit.ly/jtYLQ9

I was diagnosed with social anxiety disorder three years ago. What’s helped me the most has definitely been seeing a really good therapist. Having an encouraging, consistent, objective individual to help guide you through dealing with your anxiety is SO IMPORTANT. Really. Can’t stress it enough. When I was first diagnosed I was at a point where I…[Read more]

My therapist has helped me so much, too. I can’t remember my life before I had a therapist, lol. It is really great to have a dependable person to talk to who is not part of my family or friend circle.

I have really severe social anxiety as well. I didn’t leave my house for almost a year one time. I’m now doing better thanks to exposure and cognitive behavioral therapy. I am a college student now with a job, so I’m able to function enough to survive.
My biggest problem is my social life. Dating is near impossible, and I can’t make friends very…[Read more]

Social anxiety is something I may always struggle with. A suffered pretty bad depression a long time ago coupled with social anxiety. My doctor prescribed me Neurontin for the anxiety and I saw a therapist every week. It helped. What helped most was doing things to make myself feel more confident, taking care of myself, working out, being…[Read more]
