The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 9 months agoI just finished The Last Man by Mary Shelley. Apocalyptic fiction is great! The book was mostly about how future England would deal with plague. [Side note: Mary Shelley did not spend a lot of time dreaming about what the future would be like. In another 80 years, we’re going to be right back in 19th century England.] I was more interested in how…[Read more]

We Straddle LA, Bitch 11 years, 9 months agoThe meet-up post has gotten buried, so I’m starting a new one. I’ll be at 1739 Public House (1739 Vermont Ave. in Los Feliz) for happy hour at 6-ish tonight. FREE PIZZA! I’ll be the one on my laptop because grad students take laptops to sports bars. The reading is never done! Please, if you come by, say hi and save me from learning how to measure…[Read more]

We Straddle LA, Bitch 11 years, 10 months agoDoes anyone here have experience with a tailor in the Silverlake area? I need some simple alterations to a menswear suit but would like to keep it masculine. I have nightmares of taking my awesome tux-styled suit to a tailor and ending up with a Hillary Clinton pantsuit. EEK! All suggestions are appreciated, even if they are outside east LA. thanks!

Is there…[Read more]

Training for a marathon April 15th so this is very relevant to my interests too!
Any answers??
Also, if anyone is interested in being e-training buddies, holla! I’m going to need all the accountability I can get going into the dark cold wet winter months.-
I tried running with the Gatorade things that look like a pack of GU except bigger. The contents are a liquid instead of a paste (or whatever GU is), but all that extra water is a pain to lug around on a long run. I’m still looking for better options.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 11 months agoMap of Ireland by Stephanie Grant is set in Boston in the 1970’s and deals with coming out and race issues from the perspective of a teenage girl. I watched The Weather Underground documentary not too long ago which turned out to be great historical context for this book.
