Genderstraddlers 12 years, 4 months agosomeone left this comment on my YouTube page: “I’ll bet you are a big hulking bull dagger diesel dyke. a real monster! [classist rape joke redacted]!!!!!!!!”
I’m not entirely sure why. I mean, occasionally I get wasted and troll homophobes, which gets me trolled right back, but I am almost positive that I did nothing (other than exist) to…[Read more]

Genderstraddlers 12 years, 5 months agoSo I followed novastar’s suggestion for the avatar change- sorry about the quality but it’s really the best I could get it to look on autostraddle for some reason. I’m conscious, as a cisgender person, of not wanting to appropriate imagery which is associated with the trans* community and that’s absolutely not my intention. What is very much my…[Read more]

Genderstraddlers 12 years, 5 months agoSo does anyone have any favourite genderstraddly/gender-related books? Fiction and non-fiction. Favourites for me have to include: Whipping Girl by Julia Serano, The Nearest Exit May be Behind You by S. Bear Bergman, Gender Outlaw: on men women and the rest of us by Kate Bornstein, Butch is a Noun by S. Bear Bergman (although that is mostly for…[Read more]

FICTION. Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin. Read it, yo.
Also this short story: http://archiveofourown.org/works/138868-
loved left hand of darkness – also that short story rocks. thanks for linking :)

I loved Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinburg, because of its historical and personal significance to the author and the glbt rights movement. It’s a genuine story that I related to a lot, but also has some very sad and angering moments. I think everyone needs to read this book, because as much as it would resonate with gay and trans people I think…[Read more]

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve been meaning to read Stone Butch Blues for ages now and this only moves it further up my list- I’ll have to suggest it to my queer reading group :)

Genderstraddlers 12 years, 5 months agoA new batch of awesome videos were just uploaded to the Reel Grrls channel on YouTube. One of them is all about gender: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dA1awHKzsU&feature=channel_video_title
is cool.-
also this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prGBfYXe9x8 . It’s about gender, but it is definitely hilarious and relevant to your interests.
-
whoops, it’s *not about gender.
-
-
These are both great, thanks! And yeah the second one is really funny and definitely relevant to my interests at least.

I need to finish my thesis omg. What are you all writing about?
-
i still have 3 more years to go but i will be writing about my research on utilizing small molecule modulators to elucidate the role of mitochondria in diseases, alzheimer’s disease in particular. what about you? good luck with your thesis, you can do it!
-
I’m essentially done with grad school, but life and my thesis have been kicking my ass. I’m writing about the potential for preserving historical sites on the moon, using the Antarctic Treaty and the World Heritage List as precedence. I know, it’s kinda out there, but it’s fun.

You all make me want to go cower in the corner…with a dictionary.

haha sorry i usually just say “will global warming kill the forests” but the post above me was too intimidating :P
-
sorry. simpler version for mine is using small molecules to study alzheimer’s disease/looking for drugs to cure it

Mine is “Do homeless LGBT youth face more discrimination within the foster/shelter system than non-LGBT youth”
or something to that effect.

Genderstraddlers 12 years, 5 months agoHey everyone, hope your day/evening/night is going well. Just to say if anyone has any suggestions for changing the group avatar feel free to give them in the comments. Personally, I’m getting a little bored of the default right now but let me know what you think. From my own perspective I’d like to avoid anything that suggests the…[Read more]

Ugh I am so sorry that happened to you! What an absolutely vile comment. Of course no amount of trolling homophobes would have justified that reaction even if you had done it but unfortunately I think a lot of the time our mere existence really is enough to set these kind of people off. The point you raise about the treatment of different kinds of…[Read more]
i agree with this. i generally try to take xyz-phobic comments, be it based on race/culture/class/gender/sexuality/etc., as an indicator of what they perceive as threatening (because otherwise life would just be a bowl of slightly moldy cherries rather than just cherries. mm, cherries). and well it is irritating in a way that there is this…[Read more]
I feel like I’m not going to appear nearly as eloquent or wordy as Lucy, but anyway:
Basically every day some asshat at my school yells at me, “You look like Justin Bieber!” Of course, I respond positively. I’ve had my pictures submitted to that tumblr. I just hate that they say this in a derogative manner.
It’s virtually never a good idea to compare whether one form of oppression is worse than another, especially because–newsalert–they’re often related. The same cultural mores and stereotypes underlie homophobia, transphobia, sexism, etc., and they can all lead to hatred.
One observation I’ve made is that gender policing in Western culture does…[Read more]
