Fencestraddlers 8 years, 1 month ago Any queer ladies in straight-appearing partnerships with kids? I don’t have any yet, but I wonder a lot about how/when I would address my sexuality with them since Mommy and Daddy would appear straight. I’m just starting to look for an in-person queer community to participate in, so I don’t have anyone I’d take cues from yet. Would any of you be willing to share your experiences with this? Thanks!
I’m not in this situation, but I know that Faith Cheltenham of BiNetUSA is partnered with a man and they have children — she may have written about this before, and that might be helpful!
This fits me. My kids are 4 and 7 and I’ve had girlfriends over, but it’s not like I’m making out in front of the kids.
I need to think about casually dropping it into conversations because I don’t want to make it seem like a big deal or secret.
Right? I’m currently swimming in a bisexual parenting internet rabbit hole (thanks, @internrachel!), and I’m seeing some pieces where people talk about LGBTQI+ parent social groups that include the kids, so that could be one way of normalizing the experience (I think the writer was in the UK and I closed the tab, otherwise I’d link). I also found this for kids of queer parents ages 13+: http://colageyab.weebly.com/#_=_
I also like the idea of extending the ideas in the latter half of this (http://everydayfeminism.com/2013/01/gender-neutral-parenting-myths/) to include encouraging critical thinking about the possibilities in our world for orientation as well as gender identity.
