Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 1 month ago Two books to report. Last weekend, I finished St Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves by Karen Russell (246 pages.) Aside from having a truly amazing title, this book contains ten short stories, each with a hint of fantasy. This is a very well-written, dreamy book and the characters are never lost in the fairy tale elements: it’s a completely believable world where nuns rehabilitate girls raised by wolves and a minotaur struggles with fatherhood and societal pressure. I liked some of the stories more than others, but even my least favorites were good.
And earlier this week I reread the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (384 pages) because all of the movie news made me realize how little I remembered about Glimmer or Thresh or any of the other ridiculously named kids. This book is not without its flaws (I’m not convinced Suzanne Collins has ever seen an episode of reality tv), but it is an engrossing read and Katniss is a great YA character.
