Anyone else seen “Inside Out”? Tumblr pointed out to me that all the characters in the movie had emotions with gender presentations that matched those characters gender, except for the main character, Riley. She had three female presenting emotions, two male presenting emotions (I’m not sure if emotions have genders, even in movies). Obvious headcannon: Riley is genderqueer.
I found the movie really touching, and really found intense the way it basically portrayed what mental illness could be like (consul shutting down, joy not being in headquarters, bottling up sadness), so I’m really happy to think of the main character as genderqueer, like me.
What do you think Riley’s gender is, guessing from her emotions genders? I’ve seen a decent amount of people dub her genderfluid, and I guess I see where their coming from, the idea that she experiences the gender of whichever emotion is in charge, but I thought of her more as bigender leaning feminine, since the emotions in her head are stable in their gender presentations.
I know it’s just an animated movie, but people are talking about how it might allow parents to talk to their kids about mental illness. Considering the only maybe genderqueer characters in children’s movies tend to be robots and aliens, I think considering Riley as genderqueer could be really cool.
    Any additional thoughts?

    • I haven’t seen the movie yet, but in watching previews online, I noticed the exact same thing, and almost immediately headcanoned Riley as bi-gender. Don’t know if the filmmakers intended it or not (given their paymasters’ track record with queer issues, I’m going *not*), but it’s pretty obvious to me.
