Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months agoToday I read Vampire Diaries: The Fury by LJ Smith (285 pages).
Still cheesy, still fun. It ends on a surprising down beat, which is kind of unusual for a YA book. I don’t think this was intended to be a 4 book series and it was supposed to end here. I’m actually glad she did write the 4th one because it’s my favorite in…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months ago@internrachel, @julia1 I just finished Asimov On Science Fiction, by (obviously) Isaac Asimov (300 pages). It was a collection of essays from various places that he published over the years on the topic of science fiction: what it means, popular authors, film vs. books, and the history of the field. I enjoyed it, but I’d read quite a few of the e…[Read more]

have you ever read “The Secret History of Science Fiction” ed. by James Patrick Kelly? http://amzn.to/pQjbun it’s a collection of the best of the least known sci-fi works that defined the genre – “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” by Ursula K. LeGuin, “Descent of Man” by T. C. Boyle, “Homelanding” by Margaret Atwood, and a great many others.

I haven’t, thanks for the recommendation! I’ve read a couple of the stories in it, but it still seems worth checking out.

So, I finished the book I mentioned briefly at the end of my last post, The Rehearsal by Eleanor Catton (317). This came highly recommended by a friend; it’s about two different schools, one a music school and one a theatre school. At the music school, an underage girl is sleeping with her teacher, and it becomes an abuse s…[Read more] -

After a string of good books, I finally read one that I didn’t like. I wanted to read Next, by James Hynes (308 pgs) because all the reviews said things like, “This book is great, and Something happens at the end that we can’t tell you about, but it’s what makes the book great.” How could you resist a mystery like that?

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months agoToday I read The Vampire Diaries: The Struggle by LJ Smith (278 pages).
Still cheesy, still fun. Elena is way brattier and Stephen is more Angel-like in his angst than I remember. TV!Elena and TV!Stephen are way cooler.
So at the end of the book, Elena is killed by Katherine and becomes a vampire. I have no idea if…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months agoHeya @internrachel, @julia1, everybody!
I just finished Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac, 187 pages. To be fair, I started reading it a while ago and then put it down, as somewhere halfway through the spiritual stuff got a bit too much for my taste (and then I found myself reading like 5 books at the same time – I hate it when that happens). Other than…[Read more] -

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months agoSometimes @internrachel and @julia1 when it rains it pours. Four books that I had requested awhile ago came in in a matter of two days this week while I was still reading ‘The Second Sex’. Library books take precedence though so I’ve read two of them and hope to have the other two done next week. First off is ‘A Girl’s Guide to Taking Over the…[Read more]

I read ‘A Girl’s Guide to Taking Over the World’ recently too! I loved it so, so much. It made me really nostalgic for my punk days. Don’t you think a lot of those selections wouldn’t look out of place in blogs these days? I think things are definitely moving online for that kind of expression for most girls, but I can’t help feeling like…[Read more]

I was so sad when I saw it had been published in ’97 because I totally would have sent out for some of the zines. I think blogs have completely taken the place that zines once held, they’re a lot more convenient in a lot of ways but they seem less anarchic. It only takes a couple of minutes to set up a blog legally for free. Overall I’m pretty sad…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months agoToday I read The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening by LJ Smith (276 pages).
So I am desperately missing ‘The Vampire Diaries’ TV show. ‘True Blood’ just ain’t getting it done, y’all. So I decided to re-read the books. Oh, LJ Smith. My best friend and I were freaking OBSESSED with her books in high school. I’ve read this…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months agoTwo books to report. Last weekend, I finished St Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves by Karen Russell (246 pages.) Aside from having a truly amazing title, this book contains ten short stories, each with a hint of fantasy. This is a very well-written, dreamy book and the characters are never lost in the fairy tale…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months agoAt my teacher’s recommendation, I read the play M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang (100 pages). I’ve been dealing with a lot of Shakespeare lately so I was confused at first that it wasn’t in iambic pentameter. I got over the shock and it was fun to read in book form – now I want to see it. It was cool because it talked about sexism and racism…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months agooh i also read ‘granta 88: mothers’, 256 pages. i don’t know how i didn’t know that granta existed until recently. anyway the theme of ‘mothers’ was much like you might expect, many men reflecting on their childhood relationships with their mothers, which i found strange because it is so far away from what my relationship with my mum is like. but…[Read more]

I recently read Oryx and Crake by Maraget Atwood (374 pages). It focuses on the memories of what could be the last man in the world. Sure, he’s left with children of Crake and their uniform green eyes, perfect bodies, and rainbow of skin colors, but they’re not quite like our narrator.
At the books most climatic points, I f…[Read more] -

Today I just finished Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger (401 pages) which I really enjoyed. The twists in the book came at just the right times so that the story didn’t drag or seem too choppy. Also, while it def was a love story, it wasn’t one of those cheesy/gag me now stories that you sometimes see. Like her…[Read more] - Load More
