Academics Anonymous: Study Trouble R' Us. 12 years agoSo. We’re group of the week! *yay*
For me, my academic year started with creating my Get This Shit Together-plan. A.k.a figuring out when I’ll be doing what, how long that reasonably will take and how I will earn the money to pay for that. I was very satisfied with myself. However, main problem is still concentration. How do I make my hours in…[Read more]

For me my main distractions are being cold, my cell phone, and noise, respectively. So: Bring sweater for cold library (despite that it’s like 90 out all the time wtf library), pack cell phone away (on silent) in bag (I don’t, at this moment, have quite the fortitude to turn it off), and make sure to have an ipod with music that helps me…[Read more]

A good way to keep from eating, if your library allows (or wherever you study), is bringing a huge (reusable) bottle of water. I find the zone-out munching I like to do while studying is easily replaced with unconsciously drinking lots of water, and then you keep yourself awake and moving with all the bathroom breaks. yeah.

Is it just me who gets so DAMN hungry while studying ? I feel like I need to eat more when I study than when I work (= physical work). Weird.

so question for you guys. i’m considering joining the LGBTQ group on my campus but main reason i didn’t last year when i first moved was because i was afraid i’d end up hanging out with students in my classes. is that ridiculous? i guess i’m worried about maintaining some level of professionalism since i have to teach, but now i just want to hang…[Read more]

I don’t have an answer… I would just like to say that I’m going through the exact same thing right now.
-
I think this is going to happen to me too.
-
Is there no grad student queer org? (start one?) Also, you could volunteer at a local queer org and meet people off campus that way!
-
I’ve kinda established myself as a grad student in the group and don’t hang out with the members much outside of GSA stuff (with the exception of a few – who actually are mostly other grads). As fairly knowledgeable about queer academics – which very few others in my group are b/c their isnt much of a gender/women’s/queer studies program here -…[Read more]

That’s neat. I feel like I’m not knowledgeable enough to be an advisor! But I can definitely be (or rather, I guess I already am) a nerdy queer in the corner :D I emailed the group and apparently they don’t have meetings or anything, just random events scattered around the year, so we’ll see how it goes.
-
Good luck! Hope you are able to find a comfortable way to negotiate your place in the group.

Thanks :)

Academics Anonymous: Study Trouble R' Us. 12 years agoHey! I’m MacKenzi. I am a sophomore at LSUA in Louisiana, studying English with hopefully a concentration in film studies (I want to be a movie critic when I “grow up”). I spent a semester as a Vocal Performance major, but it wasn’t nearly as fun, lol. Very pleased to meet y’all!

TexaStraddle 12 years agoCORPUS. IS THERE LIFE HERE? AHHHH!

I hear there’s some sort of Selena monument. Does that count?
-
no. she’s dead. :|
-
Much like Corpus. The Hidden Door’s ok, and tends to be packed full on the weekends.
-
-
-
There’s a good chance I’ll be moving to Corpus in the near future (around April-ish), I’m optimistic that the scene will be decent. Am I being unrealistic?
-
mmmm, there’s a lot of gayz here, yes, but I usually hang around the college kids and also do a lot of activism work and find that to be the fun stuff and also, i’m kind of lame. but there are also clubs and bars and poetry slams. TELL ME IF YOU COME, WE COULD BE FRANZ.
-
that all sounds fabs, I’ll definitely keep you updated!
