The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 11 months agoI’ve been busy reading in the past few days! Here’s what I’ve finished recently:
‘Reality Bites Back: The Troubling Truth About Guilty Pleasure TV’ by Jennifer Pozner – It’s a hilariously snarky, but serious academic take down of reality TV and it’s regressive, offensive ideas about women, people of color, and the poor. It’s putting into words…[Read more]

TravelStraddle 11 years, 11 months agoHeyo! I know this group doesn’t get much action, but let’s change that! I’m looking for a travel partner in Thailand next March-April and would love to travel with another Straddler.
Who I am: 22 y/o English teacher, originally from the States. Well-travelled, mellow, outgoing, outdoorsy. Travel interests: Weird food, hiking, biking, spending…[Read more]-
hey, I’m going to be heading in that direction next year (South East Asia is about as far as I have narrowed it down in my planning, starting with Bali in February). I was in Thailand briefly last year but spent all my time in one spot so am keen to go back and experience a bit more.
I’m 27, Aussie, well travelled, and have pretty similar…[Read more]-
awesome! What part of Thailand did you stay in? I’m thinking of hanging in Chiang Mai if I end up travelling solo, but am really keen on exploring more of the island areas. If you end up making it out there, holla.

I stayed on Koh Tao off the eastern coast, definitely a dive mecca. I’m looking at the islands off the west coast for next year, looks like the better side for climbing.

Hey, thought I’d shout out, see if you’re still planning your trip. I’m in Lombok now and just thinking ahead a little, trying to figure out where to head next.
I’m still def keen to do some climbing in Thailand, and think it would be better with a buddy.
Let me know if your still up for it. (Also, you can catch me on facebook – heather norrie –…[Read more] -
I’m heading to Southeast Asia this summer from the end of may to the end of August. I’m going to be volunteering at a school in Cambodia from around May 30-July 22. I’m hoping to explore Cambodia quite a bit on the weekends and then after my time there, I’m figuring out where to travel. I’m going with the less is more mentality on this and…[Read more]

The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 11 months agoIn the last few days I’ve finished up a couple of books I’ve been reading:
‘In the Peanut Gallery with Mystery Science Theater 3000: Essays on Film, Fandom, Technology, and the Culture of Riffing’ eds. Robert Weiner and Shelley Barba – This was fun. I loves me some MST and you could tell the people who wrote these essays do too. The book…[Read more]

The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 11 months agoToday I read ‘Body Shots: Hollywood and the Culture of Eating Disorders’ by Emily Fox-Kales. This book explains in plain English (i.e. no endless strings of academic jargon) the ways in which Hollywood movies both reflect and encourage the cultural attitudes and thought processes that cause eating disorders. The author is both a professor and a…[Read more]

The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 11 months agoHello hello! I just finished ‘Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?’ by Mindy Kaling. Overall it was pretty good, although individual essays ranged from hilarious to totally boring and annoying. I liked it as much as I liked Bossypants, although I think Bp has a much wider audience. If (like me)you fall into Mindy Kaling’s target audience of ‘smart,…[Read more]

The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 11 months agoI just finished reading ‘Dies the Fire’ by S.M. Stirling and it was AWESOME! It’s the first book in a series, but it’s a self-contained story; it doesn’t end on a cliffhanger or anything. One day out of the blue, there’s a flash of white light and everything mechanical stops working all at once. Not only that, but guns and steam engines don’t work…[Read more]

TravelStraddle 11 years, 11 months agoHey, I’m an Aussie living in Denmark, I’ll be around til the end of January. I’d love to know what people think are absolutely must see places in Europe… at the moment I have plans to go to Berlin, Amsterdam, Vienna, Stockholm, Brussels / Ghent and Italy, but I would like to hear about other people’s experiences… oh and if you are in any of…[Read more]

Amsterdam, is a definite must see, I loved living there and the free vibe! But I also lived in Ghent and really loved it, I find Brussels quite dirty tbh and unfriendly I don’t think there’s that much to see there, other than the Grand Place. Ghent is my most recommended city in Belgium. But I didn’t mind Antwerp it has great shopping and a few…[Read more]

I was in Brussels for three days last December and loved it; it was one of my favourite cities, despite an expensive hostel bed which came without hot water.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 11 months agoOkay, so I was going to read that Cleopatra biography, but then I got ‘Monstrous Regiment’ by Terry Pratchett in the mail and had to read it first.
I just finished it today and I LOVED it! I’m making my way through the Discworld books all willynilly, but out of the ones I’ve read so far I think this is my favorite. It was hilarious and somehow…[Read more]
