The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 11 months agoI’ve finished a lot of books this week!
I just finished ‘The Elegance of the Hedgehog’ by Muriel Barbery today. This was among my prizes for coming in second in the Autostraddle summer book club and I lucked out! It was very good. A very solitary concierge in a building full of very rich people works hard to present an image of stupidity and…[Read more]

Browncoats, Scoobies & other Whedonites 11 years, 11 months agoI’ve been in China a few months now and decided to watch some Firefly, Shindig to be exact, and had a very very happy moment when Kaylee said “shenme?” and I was all “OMG I UNDERSTAND!”. It was awesome.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 11 months agoI just finished The Last Man by Mary Shelley. Apocalyptic fiction is great! The book was mostly about how future England would deal with plague. [Side note: Mary Shelley did not spend a lot of time dreaming about what the future would be like. In another 80 years, we’re going to be right back in 19th century England.] I was more interested in how…[Read more]

The Great Library of Autostraddle 11 years, 11 months agoI’ve been busy reading in the past few days! Here’s what I’ve finished recently:
‘Reality Bites Back: The Troubling Truth About Guilty Pleasure TV’ by Jennifer Pozner – It’s a hilariously snarky, but serious academic take down of reality TV and it’s regressive, offensive ideas about women, people of color, and the poor. It’s putting into words…[Read more]

Browncoats, Scoobies & other Whedonites 11 years, 11 months agoSo I was a wee bit intoxicated a few nights ago and left a slightly crazy comment on Lizz’s Twilight review basically lauding Buffy as the most legit vampire-themed entertainment OF ALL TIME. I posed a lot of questions IN ALL CAPS because I’m sort of a lunatic, but they are questions I would legit love to discuss (along with SO MANY MORE) if…[Read more]

Browncoats, Scoobies & other Whedonites 11 years, 11 months agoHi, I’ve just started watching Buffy (super late to the party)
and I was wondering what was the best season to start on? And when does willow and tara start?-
The Willow and Tara plot starts midway through season 4 and ends in season 6. Willow has another lesbionic relationship in season 7. Happy viewing!

Yay, another newbie! Welcome to your newest obsession!
I’d definitely start right at the beginning with Season 1. S1 is a little cheesier than the rest of the seasons (it takes the “high school is hell” metaphor very literally), but it lays out the show’s mythology and starts building the character relationships really nicely. But S1 is really…[Read more]

Alright thanks for being so helpful. I started season 1 (and by that I mean I watched one episode since I’ve been so busy lately) and I found it to be rather hard to watch. Hopefully it improves- I heard it gets really good third season. I’m just curious as to what it is about the show that has turned it into such a cult classic. Is it the…[Read more]

Heh, yeah Season 1 can be hard to watch. There’s a high cheese content compared to the rest of the show. I’m lucky in that I adore camp, so I just found it hilarious. But for my more normal friends, I’ve suggested they try to see what aspect of high school experience Whedon is using the monster of the week as a metaphor for and that seems to…[Read more]
