Tarot School 9 years, 4 months agoSo I have a question for you all. I’m a super slow tarot learner – I’ve been using tarot cards for over ten years, and still only read for myself. I’ll occasionally do a reading for a friend, but I always feel a bit silly about, so the readings get a bit punchy, too. Does anyone here do professional readings and/or read a lot for others? I’m not…[Read more]

Tarot School 9 years, 4 months agoHi All! I’ve been doing Tarot for about a year now, mostly for myself. I think I’ve picked up a good understanding of the cards (although I still need to refer to the book for many cards), and am at ease doing readings for myself. I find readings for others to be much trickier- I haven’t explored much beyond the celtic cross, or three card…[Read more]

I haven’t given readings to anyone else yet but I really like Dr. Apollo’s all purpose spread (see my previous post from a ways back. Wish I could link to it here but I don’t know how to do that since they don’t seem to have their own URL. If anyone knows btw please tell me). I’ve read that many readers will choose one that feels right based on…[Read more]

Celtic not centric.

I agree with the all-purpose spread. I’ve also found a lot of interesting and tailored spreads on tumblr, for lots of different situations.

I haven’t tried any of these out yet, but they all looked really good to me:
Personal stuff-
And for romantic readings -…[Read more]-
Ooh, looking forward to taking a peek at these! thank you!

Tarot School 9 years, 4 months agohi all! i’m so excited that this group exists! i am just now seriously embarking upon study of the tarot, and have a question for you all. it’s a little embarrassing to admit, but this space makes me feel safe to. i am having a hard time trusting that the cards i draw are the “right” cards – that my intuition is strong enough to know which card to…[Read more]

I can’t tell you how I think this whole thing works (Jung probably had some brilliant ideas – re. synchronicity), I just know from experience that it works! It doesn’t seem to matter if you believe in it or not. If you do one thing or another. It just always seems to work. I think that probably the best way to get through what you’re…[Read more]

So I’m extremely new to tarot, but I’ve been working off of the basic assumption that I am, in fact, finding what I want/need in the cards more so than drawing the “correct” cards. That’s the explanation I feel like I can trust pretty easily. I’m also really okay with that as an explanation, personally – being prompted to use a card to think…[Read more]

thanks, Elisabeth and Jane, for your input! very helpful. i also wanted to mention that i texted a friend about this today, about “how it works,” and her response was “it’s magic, dood.” and i was like, oh, ok, that i can get down with! and then the spread i just did (one of the more in-depth ones i’ve done) was one of my best yet. there is…[Read more]

Hi Teja, when I first started reading with tarot cards I wasn’t so sure as well if what I’m doing is right. What helped me get over this hump was realising that in tarot, there is no right or wrong, only what is. I’m quite analytical too (but have a strong intuition—well it’s not necessarily one or the other so I digress) and I just read, based o…[Read more]

I totally know what you mean! There’s definitely a certain magic to the tarot, but I have also satisfied my analytical side, especially when it comes to readings for myself. My theory is that I could pick any given card for any given day, and find some kind of meaning in it relative to my day or my question. Tarot is a tool which can help us…[Read more]

Hi Teja! I struggled with this too when I started, and still do from time to time. One way that’s helped me frame it is to approach the tarot from a very down-to-earth, almost pop-psychology perspective. Look at it as a way to facilitate having a conversation with yourself – a sort of free-association game. Or think of a Rorschach test: you look…[Read more]

Tarot School 9 years, 4 months agoHey guys! I just did my first ever reading with a “card a day” spread. I drew the ten of swords, and now I’m stressed out because I don’t know how to interpret it! The only thing I could think of was that I can create melodrama in my own life, but I was curious about how others interpret this card.
-
This is a difficult card for me also. Swords relate to air, the internal processes of thought or emotion but tend to be a bit more negative than cups with also deal with the same things. Tens represent an excess of the suit–the suit gone too far. So this could be as simple as you’re thinking about ______ too much. I think this card can also…[Read more]

And because I want to practice Ali’s magical HTML geekery here’s some quotes from Biddy Tarot on the 10 of Swords that are reassuringly more positive.
The Ten of Swords also indicates a difficult experience of endings, loss, pain or release. However, the saving grace is that you have a new awareness and a positive sense of relief that the…

Those interpretations made a lot of sense for me! I’m about to take the GRE, and I’m extremely nervous about it, so in relation to the ten of swords, I’m interpreting that I need to worry less about studying and the outcome. Thanks Elisabeth!
-
Great! Good luck! I think the difficulty will be over soon and will evolve into something new also seems quite fitting!

Good luck with your GREs! Tens can mark a turning point between the end of an old cycle and the beginning of a new one. Sometimes the ten of swords is an indicator that you’ve already faced the worst of a situation, and the silver lining is that you can begin to heal and move on. A good thing to keep in mind is that the swords can often indicate…[Read more]

Those interpretations make sense, as well. Thank you!

I do not do professional readings, or even read a lot for others, but it sounds to be like you need to trust your intuition more. Maybe easier said than done, I know. I’d make sure that the friend you practice on isn’t too skeptical as well, to help you feel more confident.
That’s good advice, Alison! I have a history of letting my skepticism block my intuition, and many of my friends are skeptical folk. I need to practice more, too.
You did an amazing job helping me with my reading!!! I think you have every reason to feel confident in your abilities! I agree with Alison. It seems that a skeptic attitude from another person could really interfere with the process!
I second this. You owned that reading!
This may not appeal to you, but there are a few online tarot associations that offer free readings over the internet. It’s an opportunity for readers as well, a way to learn how to read for other people without the pressure of putting yourself out there as a “pro,” or constantly pestering skeptical friends. The sites have various criteria for how…[Read more]
Thank you guys! Elisabeth, thank you for the opportunity to practice. And Mary L, I’ll definitely check that out.
