Cyanide and Happiness, Saturday Morning Breakfast Cartoon, My Cardboard Life, Kawaii Not.
Good stuff-
Yeessss, SMBC! So wonderful ^_^ Haven’t heard of the last 2 but I’ll definitely be checking them out
-
My Cardboard Life – I met the artist at a convention and she’s really cute with an adorable soft British accent.
British humour though so I understand less than half of the jokes.

Cyanide and Happiness is my go-to comic on bad days. Beer Run <3

Comics, Anyone? 12 years, 5 months agoSo I *just* heard that a pilot has been shot for Fables for ABC. Is this old news?? Am I the last to find out about something so totally badass [per usual]???!
Ginnifer Goodwin (ala “Big Love”) is Snow White. And the writers are from LOST. I am really hoping that the ABC execs or whoever pick this up…because this has awesomesauce written all over it.-
You’re not the last one to find out about this, because I AM! I’m so excited for this! I just hope they don’t fuck it up, because I adore Fables! I just…don’t know how to feel about the Jack spinoff. Does it get better after he breaks out of that prison town thing the first time? Because that’s the last I read of it.
-
Ugh…Jack was never one of my fave characters anyway so I could never really get into his spinoff deal.
-
-
ahhh i heard that this died though! :(
-
Really? It hasn’t had a chance to die yet. The pilot was shot & it’s in the mix with however many other pilots & the ABC peeps have to decide which pilots they want to try out. So…there’s still a chance!
-
ohh.. interesting. so this new show isn’t directly supposed to be based off of fables but it obviously seems to be borrowing heavily from the fables storyline. i heard of the fables pilot that abc made a while ago, in 2008, which basically died immediately afterward. seems like they are trying to reincarnate that effort in a thinly disguised new…[Read more]
-
ohhh…this is interesting indeed. ginnifer goodwin was on jimmy kimmel last night & never actually mentioned the name of the show. she just said she was snow white…and explained very briefly about how the other fairy tale characters go to her for “advice” or something like that.
i had no clue it wasn’t officially fables though…weird (and…[Read more]

Have you read This Book is Overdue?
-
i have not. do tell.
-
-
“the public library is a singularly american invention” – really now?
-
maybe the author means circulating libraries available to the public at large (communities), as opposed to private or subscription models.
-
I still find it hard to believe that *that* specific idea is originally American, given that we’ve had some form of publishing and knowledge exchange since the days of papyrus. o_O
-
true, but were the materials available to the people? in certain ancient societies (thinking Egypt here) the scribes had access, and the upper class, if they could read. books were collected/stolen and added to the collection and not allowed to circulate.
that said, i think that the author is being hyperbolic, esp. since there’s no reference for…[Read more]

Seems like the author is thinking of the current conception of public libraries as document repository, educational center and community hub–which is about a hundred years old, give or take. A lot of the pioneers of that movement were American, but not all–there are so many different library models that my job at (Clap Clap) NGO works with…[Read more]

Considering the oldest library in North America wasn’t even USian…it was founded in Mexico by a bishop who kicked out the Jesuits out of town and made their confiscated books available to all readers.
Unfortunately the history of libraries in North America is going to be tied up with the history of colonialization pretty much uniformly, though…[Read more]

it was an interesting day in my mlis class at kent state university (ohio) when we discussed the carnegies. i always thought of andrew carnegie as a philanthropist who donated money for the lovely library i got to grow up in as a child. my fellow students from pennsylvania enlighted us all to his robber baron reality. #conundrum

Melville Dewey used to make women put their bust size on their job applications. Apparently everyone in the history of our field was kinda a dick. :D
-
I don’t know much about Carnegie, but that makes him sound like Robin Hood.
-
there is an argument to be made that he exploited his workers, though he was outspoken about worker’s rights.

Comics, Anyone? 12 years, 5 months agoYES! We haz a group!
So many titles I don’t know where to start O_o
Well I guess since I am doing a final paper on the history of Selina Kyle (had to be a character that’s been around for 25 years or more) I’ll first ask if anyone’s read Catwoman: When in Rome.
Also who wants a Runaway’s movie as much as I do?
-
They’re planning on making one! There was a casting call recently that drew a loooot of raised eyebrows because the characterization in the descriptions seemed way off and it looked like Nico was gonna be whitewashed–but I don’t know what happened with that.
-
I just don’t understand why movie execs option comic books (or any kind of book, really) to turn into a film when they have no interest in actually filming the book itself! And don’t even get me started on the whitewashing bullshit. Oh, but everyone has a heart attack that Idris Elba is even in the Thor movie at all. (dudes, it’s not like…[Read more]

@Kestral I know! I just haven’t heard ANYTHING since that little bit of fan outrage.
I don’t understand changing the story at all, it’s very cinematic as far as storytelling and visuals and the first arc could easily be condensed into a movie.
