The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 3 months agoI’m about to finish “Among Other Things I’ve Taken Up Smoking” by Aiobheann Sweeney, and am juggling “The Age of American Unreason” by Susan Jacoby and “Red Emma Speaks,” a collection of Emma Goldman’s essays and speeches, on the side. But I’ve also realized that my local library suuuuuucks. What are some super popular queer (or even queerish)…[Read more]

Browncoats, Scoobies & other Whedonites: 12 years, 3 months agoDollhouse. I feel like this thread will be the most empty – prove me wrong.

Doooolllhoooouse.
-
This is one of my favorite shows. All that business with memory, identity, and fun transhumanist stuff really turns my crank.
-
I don’t give two fucks about Echo and Ballard; Victor and Sierra MADE this show. Sidenote: HOLY CRAP how amazing in Enver Gjokaj?
-
Wait, why weren’t these put in the Dollhouse thread? I think what we need to do is click on the forum topic and then post instead of replying on this page.
-
Enver Gjokaj was an absolute genius when it came to impersonating others. Like, Topher was a hard character to do and it was flawless! And Mr. Dominic was pretty difficult too, since he didn’t have the more obvious ticks and speech patterns that Topher did, but Enver got his tone of voice and mannerisms down cold. Why isn’t he more…[Read more]

Browncoats, Scoobies & other Whedonites 12 years, 3 months agoHas anyone here turned someone on to Whedon shows? I gave my coworker my season 1 dvd of Buffy like a month ago but she hasn’t watched it yet. I want to convert someone.
Part of the agreement is that I’m supposed to watch some new MTV show called Teen Wolf. Does anyone know if this show is as terrible as I think it is?
-
lololol. I haven’t seen Teen Wolf. IDK. I love Pretty Little Liars now, and I would never have watched it were it not for the presence of a gay lady. So you might like it. I feel like anybody who likes soap operatic/supernatural teen shows (like I suspect Teen Wolf is) will inevitably LOVE Buffy. It’s just a matter of time.
Since delving into…[Read more]

I think it’s going to be rough no matter what episode they watch first because it’s too early; they don’t connect with or care about the characters yet. I’m just a proponent of starting from the beginning. Anything else would be like opening up a fiction novel and reading a random chapter.
I don’t know though. I mean, the first time I saw Buffy…[Read more]

I have converted people to Whedon fans. With Buffy, I find it’s best just to start them with the first season and tell them that the first season really hammers home the “High School Is Hell” metaphor. Compared to what the show became from the second season on, the first season seems kind of cheesy and a bit more simplistic, but if you’re trying…[Read more]

That’s probably the smart way to do it. If I had the Firefly DVD or if she had Netflix, I would’ve made her watch it first for sure.

teen wolf is a barron landscape! ditch the ride! abort!
i’ve “recruited several friends/fans through the power of #Firefly and i have no regrets. #justwatchit

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 4 months agoGuys, I just started reading Annie On My Mind. I am so excited, but the first few pages were sad already. I am anticipating identifying too closely with the main character.
Any other good queer fiction to recommend? I’ve got the nonfiction more or less covered.
-
I love tipping the velvet by Sarah Waters. I’ve also read oranges aren’t the only fruit, which to me was quite strange but I guess if it’s in your library, give it a go.
-
Oranges Aren’t the Only Fruit is an interesting read – Winterson has a different way of writing but it’s powerful nonetheless. Give it a try.
-
Another great YA lesbian novel is Keeping You a Secret. Also a bit sad, but it’s pretty good. Not as well written as Annie on My Mind, though.
-
Oh, and ASH by Malinda Lo. It’s a lesbian retelling of Cinderella!
-
i second this, and add “huntress” #omg #sogood

Browncoats, Scoobies & other Whedonites 12 years, 4 months agoWas anyone else like really really weirded out when Felicia Day wasn’t in Dollhouse at first? Then like super excited like “THERE SHE IS!” when she finally showed up?
-
weirded out like how?
-
I mean. Did you expect her to be?
I’m not sure when I knew she was gonna be on, although it was probably in advance since at that point in time I was reading whedonesque daily. But by the same token, I knew exactly who was cast in Dollhouse well before it actually began, sooo. -
It made me so mad that Fox took the best episode and decided not to air it.
That was also the same time that they were promoting Glee like fuck. They had those “I’m a gleek” promos before the show had even STARTED. Dollhouse coulda used some of that love. -
(sorry for the tangent. it’s all epitaph one related.)
