Appleheads (Fiona Apple Fandom) 12 years, 3 months ago Favorite lyrics? I have a lot of favorites, but off the top of my head I’ve always felt particularly fond of: “Hunger hurts, but starving works, when it costs too much to love” from “Paper Bag”.
There’s so many! Yours is a great line, I also like “when I’m gone like yesterday
when I’m high like heaven, when I’m strong like music, cause I’m slow like honey, and heavy with mood” from ‘Slow like Honey”.
I also love this line and the chorus from “Oh Well”, “My peace and quiet was stolen from me, When I was looking with calm affection, You were searching out my imperfections/ What wasted unconditional love, on somebody who doesn’t believe in the stuff”
Ooo, good ones! That unconditional love lyric in “Oh Well” always gets me.
Yes, “Oh Well.” so good, but so much better on the Jon Brion version of Extraordinary Machine. Musically, the Brion and Elizondo version are not that different, but Fiona’s vocal performance is significantly more raw and passionate on the former. What do you guys think?
The lyrics to “Parting Gift.” Funny, clever, painful. “I took off my glasses while you were yelling at me once, more than once so as not to see you see me react. Should’ve put ’em, should’ve put ’em on again so I could see you see me sincerely yelling back.”
“Extraordinary Machine” is the most inspiring thing ever. “Red Red Red” slays me every time. Oh man, I’m gonna stop now. I could go on forever. Fiona is my spirit animal.
