Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoLet me try that again:
Finished A Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. 311 pages. Makes Harvard Yard seem waaaaay scarier. Whenever Atwood mentioned Luke, the husband, I couldn’t help but picture Luke from Gilmore Girls, which really wasn’t appropriate.
-
Ah, truly a classic. I always felt that book should have been more scary than it actually was, though. I’m not a fan of Atwood’s writing style. I thought the concept was terrifying and in the hands of a better (or at least different) writer, I would have actually felt some emotional impact while reading it. But it’s definitely one I’m glad I…[Read more]

I love A Handmaid’s Tale! And I did the Gilmore Girls thing…
Have you read any other Atwood?

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoLast night I finished The Fates Will Find Their Way by Hannah Pittard (256 pages). I really liked it–first of all, it was told in first person plural, and I don’t think I’ve read a book like that before. It’s about the lives of this group of boys who go to high school together and how they are affected by the disappearance of their classmate,…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoI read “He’s a Stud, She’s a Slut” and 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know by Jessica Valenti (213 pages).
So I was going to read the other ‘Wildwood Dancing’ book, but I moved to a new town recently and I just signed up for a new library card and ended up getting a bunch of books there. I guess I should read…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoI just finished The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I listened to it. I was trying to decide if that counts, but it was 18 hours of my life, so i think probably yes? it is apparently 544 pages in paperback (@internrachel, @julia1), according to amazon. I loved listening to this book! i downloaded it from audible, that free thing that they advertise…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoHi @internrachel and @julia1! I read Unbearable Lightness by Portia de Rossi (320 pages)…I was a little embarrassed to be in the celebrity memoir section of the library but Portia and Ellen are my favorite vegan lesbian couple and I have experience with disordered eating so I was pretty excited about it. I thought it was really well-done and…[Read more]

I just finished Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey – a whopping 1015 pages of pure bliss. I highly recommend it to anyone who remotely likes fantasy and/or heroines and/or BDSM. So obvs queerness is so totes not a big deal in the alternate universe where the Kushiel Trilogy (you better believe I’m already on the second…[Read more] -

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoAfter pseudo-starting it earlier this year, I finally sat down and read Jonathan Franzen’s Freedom (562 pages) from start to finish last week. It was quite good (just like Riese and practically every newspaper/magazine/blog I read told me it would be). I really liked the way that the Patty/Walter relationship progressed throughout the novel. It’s…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoI recently finished The Group by Mary McCarthy (487 pages) and Babycakes by Armistead Maupin (316 pages). I LOVED The Group!! I finally have a book to recommend to Straight People (although this book is not devoid of lesbians!). I think I first heard about it in Gloria Steinem’s review of Commencement by J. Courtney Sullivan, so I thought I’d…[Read more]

Autostraddle Social Club – Boston Chapter! 12 years, 3 months ago
I’m in Boston on assignment for a couple of months. Where are some cool places to hang out?
-
Welcome to Boston! My favorite gay-ish events are Queeraoke at Midway Cafe, the Heroes party at TT the Bear’s (every Saturday) and GirlSpot, which is a guerrilla takeover of a straight bar by lesbians (happens on the last Saturday of every month). Also, this is a shameless plug, but I write a weekly blog post on queer-friendly events around Boston…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoToday I finished reading “The Book of Negroes”, by Canadian author Lawrence Hill (470 pgs). The title of the novel comes from the historical document of the same name , which recorded the names of thousands of Black Loyalists, who left the US because they were promised a better life in Nova Scotia. In the US, the book was marketed under the…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months ago@internrachel & @juia1 – feeling a little behind on my summer book club! a couple of weeks ago I finished The Swimming Pool Library by Alan Hollinghurst (also pretty behind on my Hollinghurst, this is his first novel & he just released his fifth). Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agobing bang boom @internrachel and @julia1! Had a very productive week/end, I read The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, 704 pgs, in a week! A personal best. I have a strange tradition of rereading either Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead every summer, I can’t remember when I started but I’ve been doing it at least 5 years. I usually alternate but it…[Read more]

I love The Fountainhead, but every time I read it, I think about The Perks of Being a Wallflower:
“So, in school Bill gave me my final book to read for the year. It’s called The Fountainhead, and it’s very long. When he gave me the book, Bill said, ‘Be skeptical about this one. It’s a great book. But try to be a filter, not a sponge.'”
