Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months agoHi @internrachel @julia1 – I just finished ’French Milk’ by Luck Knisley (194 pages but a graphic novel so counts as 97). This served as an interlude in my reading of ’Poppy Shakespeare’ which I’m not really getting into.
I refered to ’French Milk’ as a graphic novel but to be honest it’s more of a journal. In it Lucy documents a six week trip awa…[Read more] -

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months agoI just finished Gingerbread Girl by Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover. It’s 104 ages but is a graphic novel so in book club rules that’s 52pages @internrachel @julia1
It’s a nice quick read (really, it was delivered this morning and I read it whilst my computer was performing a virus scan…) – but there isn’t much of a story. The lead character i…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months ago@internrachel @julia1 Today I finally finished Wetlands by Charlotte Roche (229 pages). I say ‘finally’ because I’ve had it since the translation was published in 2009 and I’ve probably stopped and started it more than any other book I’ve tried to read.
The story is told by Helen, an 18-year old in hospital for anal fissure. Her parents are…[Read more]-
I’ve also decided I’m going to finish two other books I’ve been stuck on for a while.
One is ‘The Accidental’ by Ali Smith. I adored Girl Meets Boy and Like but just find The Accidental too hard to get into (I’ve been reading it since about March…), I only have about an eighth of it left though.
The other is ‘Alexis’ by Marguerite Yourcenar…[Read more]

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 2 months agoI just want to thank Autostraddle for bringing Andrea Gibson to my full attention (and the rest of the Pure Poetry series too obviously…). Sure I’d heard of her before but did I ever *really* listen?
I got ‘Pole Dancing to Gospel Hymns’ this morning and it is so addictive. I keep sneaking peeks at it in my work breaks. She’s just so lyrical. I…[Read more]-
I’m a huge fan of just about everything Catherynne Valente writes, poetry or prose. I got one of her poetry books recently, A Guide to Folktales in Fragile Dialects, and it was brilliant. It explores and reinterprets women’s roles in folktale motifs. It’s more fun than I make it sound, I swear ;)
She’s also got this epic poem going online…[Read more]

Thanks for this. ‘Palimpsest’ is on my ‘to read’ list but perhaps her poetry will be a good place to start. The retelling of folktales and myths sounds like something I’d enjoy.
As for Parker, I like her poetry as well (Symptom Recital is superb!) but I’ve never been able to get into her stories.

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months ago@julia1 @internrachel Last night I finished ‘Before I Go To Sleep’ by S J Watson which is seriously creepy. It revolves around Christine who, since an accident years before, has lost her memory – every morning she wakes up with no idea who she is, where she is, who she is lying next to. That man would be Ben, her husband, who explains everything…[Read more]
