Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 1 month ago @internrachel @julia1 So yesterday I wrote about two books I read in the week, I also finished a third and started on my next.
Finished is Juno and Juliet by Julian Gough (304 pages). This is about twin sisters Juno and Juliet who head from Tipperary to Galway for their first year at university. One of the reasons I got the book was to see how effectively a man could write the inner monologue of an eighteen year old girl (the story is told from Juliet’s perspective). I know that it is a writer’s job to make a story believable in spite of the character’s genders, ages backgrounds, etc. but I’ve also read a lot of rubbish books in which I think the writer hasn’t been able to do this so, rightly or wrongly, this was one of the main reasons I picked up this book.
And he writes well, Juliet is reluctantly sentimental and excited as she chronicles her first year at uni; there are drugs, friends and boys all covered but it also seems to have more depth than just that for example when she talks about her infinite hopeless love for Juno and also the ways she envies her.
Th chapters are short and concise which makes it an easy read and I wouldn’t call it a must-read but it was enjoyable enough.
