I had a bit of a spending spree in a charity shop at the weekend and so bought and read ‘All My Friends are Superheroes’ by Andrew Kaufman on Saturday. At 108 pages it is just a wee novella but an absolute joy that I got through in one sitting.

The story is that of Tom and his new wife The Perfectionist (Perf). Tom is a completely ordinary man but all his friends are superheroes. They see nothing exceptional about this and, in fact, there really isn’t – they are simply the best at what they do. In fact the story itself is interlaced with profiles on some of the superheroes, characters who never actually come into play but just provide an interesting background to the world Tom inhabits – chances are you will see bits of your own friends in characters like The Face, The Broken Hearted Man and The Frog Kisser (in a way it’s a shame you don’t see more of these characters because they could have some interesting stories but no, this is not about them).

Anyhow, I digress, at Tom and Perf’s wedding Perf’s jealous ex Hypno hynoptises Perf into no longer being able to see or register Tom. She knows he existed and remembers their relationship but for now he is just gone. To deal with her pain she decides to move across the country and this is where the story takes place; Tom has to make Perf see him again before the plane lands or he will lose her forever.

Crammed into the 108 pages are stories from their past, their friends, why they loves each and how Tom so desperately tries to be seen again. It’s romantic, funny, sweet and relatable. A quick but deserved read.

I’m currently also reading The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy (I’ve got about 30 pages from the end of the first book), Sugar Rush and Ours Are The Streets. I also just recieved a belated online order of Emma Donoghue’s Landing and look forward to starting that. Reviews of these to come!
