Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 2 months ago Hi @internrachel @julia1 – I just finished ’French Milk’ by Luck Knisley (194 pages but a graphic novel so counts as 97). This served as an interlude in my reading of ’Poppy Shakespeare’ which I’m not really getting into.
I refered to ’French Milk’ as a graphic novel but to be honest it’s more of a journal. In it Lucy documents a six week trip away from Chicago in which she returns to her hometown of New York and then spends 5 weeks, with her mother, in Paris. There are no overarching stories, she just takes each day as it comes. She details the food she has eaten and people she has meet, she writes about finding hidden treasures at flea markets and watching films. It’s just so full of her own personality and you come away from the book feeling like you’ve just read a letter from a friend.
The illustration is lovely too – you may well have seen some of her work online at Stop Paying Attention (she also did some fantastic Harry Potter recap webcomics) and if not I do recommend checking her stuff out.
