Hey all,
I’m passing through London in June 15-18 on holiday. I’m 20 from Sydney Australia and I was hoping to go out clubbing during this time. So I was hoping if I could get some advice/possibly make some friends…I’m hoping to maybe move to London in 2012 so I really wanted to check out the scene whilst I’m there. I’m thinking of going out…[Read more]

Hey Cindy!
Afraid I’m not living in London at the moment, but lived there for 20 years so have plenty of advice :) Check out http://boards.gingerbeer.co.uk/ for what’s going on, there are plenty of meet ups and events which you could go to. G-A-Y and Candy Bar are both in SOHO right in the centre of London (and about a 5 minute walk from each…[Read more]

thanks so much! I’m going to be on my own it looks like but I think I might check out Candy Bar. Ta.xx
-
Hi! I totally forgot but I friended you as I should be around then to go out one night if you like. I’m 19 and relatively new to London, so still looking for more queer friends to go out with :) Not very knowledgeable about places as I’ve only ever been to Ku, G-A-Y and The Den, so perhaps I could check out Candy Bar with you? From all I’ve heard…[Read more]

BEST advice given above is to go East! To me it’s much more chilled an atmosphere, and it feels more like real London.
In Soho though, Ku bar gets my vote.-
I seem to hear this a lot, but where do you actually advise to go to? From what I can tell on the internet Ghetto seems to be closed and Dick and Fanny doesn’t happen very often .. and I can’t figure out if Trash Palace is the same as Ghetto. All the websites seem to be very out of date
-
there’s twat boutique and unskinny bop which you definitely need to check out. i’d also advise just going on a general bar crawl, basically it’ quite difficult to go wrong :)

Omigod, just read the account of Moscow’s Pride parade… =( Was it naive of me to think that this year would be better with so much international press?
-
I dunno, I don’t think the international press really has picked up the story much. It’s…really discouraging to see so little progress though, I know.
-
I meant more beforehand, like with the EU ruling and everything. This was the first time I’d heard anything about the Moscow parade… Or maybe it’s because I’m following the right media now. All the same, I was disheartened =(

I’m pretty sure it would be a good bet to not get your hopes up for about next 50 years on that, sadly.

How do you deal with misogynistic or homophobic language from people you care about? I’ve been trying to keep my dad from saying “dyke” for the past four years with zero progress. (He just kind of laughs whenever I say anything against it because I’m such a silly little creature, yaknow.) I have a twin brother who I love deeply but who is even…[Read more]

So difficult. Have you ever persuaded them of anything else, and if so you how did you it, i.e. what works on them? My parents are deeply geeky, so giving them essays to read seems to be working. Whether it’s more effective coming from family or stranger prob depends on the relationship – sounds like your dad has issues with taking you…[Read more]

I think AS had an article on dealing with offensive language from people you know a while ago. And this guide from Amanda Marcotte is more about mythbusting than just dealing with sexist slurs, but you might find it interesting and helpful nonetheless: http://pandagon.net/index.php/site/comments/is_it_worth_it_to_argue_down_right_wing_myths

I’ve also noticed that a good way to call people out is to use humor. For example, say that you hear somebody say that it’s weird for a boy to like to play with dolls. You could say something like “Wow, I didn’t know that genitalia had an effect on toy preference!” (obviously, genitalia does not determine gender, but people who make these…[Read more]

I sympathize with you so, so much on this. The same thing has happened to me with people I’m close to and I haven’t really had a lot of luck changing people’s opinions on things. With one family member, I finally just said “These things you say hurt me. Seriously. You’re my aunt; why don’t you care that you’re hurting me?” It didn’t change…[Read more]

You probably saw this if you looked at the feministe link, but this is really helpful: http://www.illdoctrine.com/2008/07/how_to_tell_people_they_sound.html
Another thing I think you need to figure out is if you’re dealing with the virulent, down-to-their-bones kind of hate or the privilege-denying-cluelessness. If it’s the former, there’s kind…[Read more]
