Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years ago Today I finished Love & Lies: Marisol’s Story by Ellen Wittlinger (245 pages) and also read The Lost Language of Cranes by David Leavitt (353 pages). I feel like I saw reviews of Love & Lies on AfterEllen or something a long time ago and looked at it in the bookstore, but decided that Marisol was a bit too outgoing for me and I wasn’t ready to know her. I saw it at the library and checked it out, and I actually did enjoy it even if I sometimes thought, “Marisol, why can’t you see how controlling this woman is?” But then, when I was reading The Lost Language of Cranes, I thought, “Philip, surely you can see how needy you are acting, please stop this behavior.” That book sort of reminded me of Michael Cunningham’s A Home At The End of the World, only better. I thought the book would be from only Philip’s point of view but it also shows that of his father, mother, and lesbian friend. It does sort of have not much of a cheery air (much like A Home At The End of the World), but it’s still good.
