Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years ago Over my vacation, I read Boyfriends with Girlfriends by Alex Sanchez (217 pages), Alma Mater, by Rita Mae Brown (260 pages), Getting It by Alex Sanchez (210 pages), and Life Mask by Emma Donoghue (650 pages). These are all books by authors I’ve read other works of and loved. Boyfriends with Girlfriends was great – other Sanchez novels I’ve read are primarily about gay boys but this one was about gay and bisexual dudes and ladies, so it was really fun. Getting It was a little grungier than Sanchez’z other novels – the protagonist is a straight boy (who gets a gay dude to give him a makeover). Alma Mater was… certainly not up to Rubyfruit Jungle standards. Also I was rooting for the boyfriend the whole time, which I NEVER do! Odd. Life Mask was historical, queer, and by Emma Donoghue, which seemed perfect. Really it’s a historical novel first and you have to wait a long time for lesbian content, but it was still really good and I thought that Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire was kind of adorable for the bits she was in, the way Donoghue wrote her.

Also, does anyone else think that Emma Donoghue and Sarah Waters should be best friends? (Assuming they aren’t – I don’t know about them as people, lol, I just know they both write historical and lesbian novels that are awesome.)
