The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 4 months agoJust finished my third Christopher Moore book in a row: Bloodsucking Fiends. I also started Tipping the Velvet awhile back. Any thoughts? It’s my first lesbian-related fiction book. Why do they all have to be romances though? I want action! I want excitement! Lesbian ninjas vs zombies! Yanno.. something.
-
If you like Christopher Moore, try tracking down Rock N Roll Babes From Outer Space by Linda Jaivin–it’s one of those pop-culture-humor based surreal goofy comedies, and all the main females are queer in one way or another. (The leader is heteroflexible, one is opportunistic, and one’s a butch rockergirl lesbian.)
-
OMG that’s awesome! I’ll look for it. Thanks!
-
-
Gerri Hill writes some good action; I liked “The Target,” and the first couple books of Radclyffe’s “Honor” series are good. If you want ninjas, I recommend “A Love Story: Starring My Dead Best Friend” by Emily Horner. I know it sounds rough, but it’s an amazing YA book. trust me.
I have lots of other teen books and mass-market lesbian…[Read more]

Awesome :) I haven’t read a young adult book since I was a young adult…does RL Stine still write? I used to love him!
-
Stine’s books are being repackaged…i’m not sure that’s the same thing. there’s a current trend in YA lit to reissue older series (l.J. Smith, Christopher Pike, etc.) in three-in-one omnibuses. if you like that type of story, however, i highly recommend lori stolarz’s “Project 17.”

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 4 months agoCan we talk about the amazingness that is a Kindle? I’ve developed an unhealthy attachment to mine. Like, I get anxiety if I forget to take it with me when I go somewhere, even if I won’t be able to read it. I have about 45 books on it right now. Does anyone else have one? (or a Nook, or a E-Reader)
-
Word. I’m in love with mine. I’ve got about 120 books on it, mostly thanks to Project Gutenberg. I live in Asia, so the Kindle is really my only means of purchasing English language books. I’d be dying out here without it(or more likely: using the Internet A LOT more). I can’t always find the books I want on it(JD Salinger, get your dead self up…[Read more]

A friend from Malaysia says that if you set your address to the States, you can purchase more books. (Because of liscensing whatnots)

pdx autostraddlers 12 years, 4 months agoI really think we should all (well, at least everyone who can drink) go to the Crave dance party at Crush on June 17, because I love it, and it would be fun! I only got to go to the Pride party there last year for about half an hour cause I was super sick, and I didn’t want to get anyone else sick, so I still feel like I missed out. If you haven’t…[Read more]

By ‘can drink’ I mean ‘of legal drinking age’. Obviously you don’t HAVE to drink!

Also, exclamation points!!!!

why not?

OK I want to go the crush party, but I have to go to the Gay Men’s Choir benefit thing for AIDS. So, I was think good ol Gaycation. That is the big one on Saturday, i think. Also how are we going to spot each other in the crowd?
-
Gaycation is on Friday as well. Luckily, Crave and Gaycation are super easy walking distance from one another.
-
well, shit. that was my big plan for having to spend FOREVER listening to gay men sing. Seriously this thing goes from 7 30 to 10. what is on for saturday?
-
It’s so weird that Gaycation is on Saturday this year! I also find it kinda frustrating, since lots of gay girls love Gaycation, which puts it in competition with Crave, which is one of the few good queer ladies nights in Portland. >:( I like both, but I don’t want anything interfering with Crave, since it’s something specifically for US,…[Read more]
-
Yeah, I hear ya but there’s so many events and because they are so close you can totally party hop. Gaycation is always Saturday normally but during Pride always Friday. It’s cuz NO ONE wants to compete with Blow Pony, and some of the DJs are playing it too I think.
(But yeah, Friday is crazy and I’m having a hard time figuring out my Friday…[Read more]

what is up in Nopo? I am trying to figure this all out too.

Tran family Picnic, Q Center’s Hip 2 B Q, and a house party that Eric Sellers has every year

I guess that makes sense, about Blow Pony. Also I was drunk and a little cranky when I posted that semi-rant before.

Are any of you going to Crave or Gaycation tonight? I don’t know what any of you look like!!
-
I’m going to Crave, and I’m wearing a short-sleeved white dress with rainbow knee socks. Introduce yourself if you dare! Please don’t sneak up on me, I startle easily.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 4 months agoI’m a huge Vonnegut fan and I am reading Mother Night next. I’ve already read and loved Slaughterhouse Five, The Sirens of Titan and Breakfast of Champions and various nonfiction short works of his.
-
Have you read Cats Cradle by Vonnegut? I feel like that book gets all up in my brain and spits out things I never thought anyone else felt. It’s a wonderful, quick read
-
I’ve never read and Vonnegut, I feel like that’s a sin to say or something. Any first book recommendations?
-
I say try Slaugherthouse Five or Cat’s Cradle. CC is a little lighter and a quicker read; while S5 is a bit darker and the plot line is a lot less linear. Both are great reads!
-
Cool, I think i’m going to pick up both. Thank you.
-
-
-
I have it, but have not gotten to reading CC yet. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it, I’ve liked everything I’ve read by him!

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 4 months agoI like to read a bunch of books at once. I just finished and really enjoyed Julie Serrano’s Whipping Girl, which made me realize I had a lot of internalized misogyny with regards to femininity (as a tomboy growing up and a more masculine-ish girl, it was often hard for me to relate to really femmy people, so this read was a good read for me,…[Read more]

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 4 months agoA few months back I read Just Kids by Patti Smith. It was phenomenal – and I mean really, really good. I’m an avid reader and I think it’s the best thing i’ve read all year. The book pays homage to the life of artist/photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and the relationship between Robert and Patti Smith. It mainly takes place during the late 60s…[Read more]

Just Kids is fantastic. Patti Smith has such a wonderful way of telling stories. There was a really great review of it over at This Recordings that beautifully articulates all my feelings about the book.
Have you read Please Kill Me? The story is about the same era and scene, but the style is really different. It paints a much harsher portrait…[Read more]

Yeah, I read Please Kill Me but quite a few years ago now. I think I have it in my house somewhere, I should re-read it! I’ll check out the This Recording review – now i’m curious

ooh I bought that for my mom last year for Christmas, but I haven’t read it. Next time I go to visit I’ll have to swipe it.

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 4 months agoIs it ok to ask for book recommendations here? I’m in the process of starting up a queer reading group at my university and I’d like to have a reading list drafted up before the end of summer/start of term. So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? We’re looking for both fiction and non-fiction and books touching various different topics…[Read more]

Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson, Nightwood by Djuna Barnes, Holding Still for as Long as Possible by Zoe Whittall, Angels in America by Tony Kushner, Anything by Virginia Woolf, I like A Room of One’s Own and Hedwig and the Angry Inch read the play, then you can watch the movie!!

Thanks! I’m making note of all your suggestions. The last idea is a definite winner with me- any excuse to watch Hedwig and the Angry Inch!

Also, I forgot Patti Smith – Just Kids is really great.

And the Band Played On is an incredible history of the early days of the AIDS epidemic, with (obviously) a heavy emphasis on the gay men who were affected. It might be especially appropriate given that we just observed the 30th anniversary of the first AIDS diagnosis.
Call Me By Your Name is also great–one of the hottest books I’ve ever read,…[Read more]-

The Great Library of Autostraddle 12 years, 4 months agoI’m reading Mark Twain’s a Yankee in King Arthers Court. I have not read it since I was a youngin and I’m always surprised at how relevant his work is still today. And the old time rhythm of writing is my favourite. I rarely read new books. Unless they are really good or the subject matter is interesting. I don’t like the way people write today. I…[Read more]
