Science Fictional 12 years, 4 months agoKay, for me it was Stranger in a Strange Land that did it first, but we all have science fiction books that made us go “HOLY FUCKSHIT” loudly and embarassingly in a public place or around relations, and/or get goosebumps. I miss that, and I’ve exhausted the library around here. Any suggestions?

I don’t know how you feel about short fiction, but Ted Chiang’s collection Story of Your Life and Others is amazing.
-
Oh and also? Anything by Samuel Delany. My favorite is Babel 17. (Bonus: He is super gay and has an amazing beard. The face kind, not the fake wife kind.)
-
One of the earliest stories that really made me go ‘HOLY FUCKSHIT’ was ‘The City and the Stars’, by Arthur C. Clarke. ‘The Gods Themselves’ by Asimov is another that was really important for me. I have a ton of short stories that I could recommend, but I very strongly recommend the following to everyone everywhere unless you’ve already read a…[Read more]

Tanith Lee (gender things) and Ray Bradbury (life things. was brokenhearted when I found out he doesn’t think women should read scifi)

harrison bergeron.. read it and lost my shit.

Oh, this is kind of a weird one, but the book Feed by M.T. Anderson really pretty much blew my mind when I was a teenager.

Science Fictional 12 years, 4 months agoSo what are you all reading right now/what did you just finish/what are you planning to start?
-
I’m reading Kim Harrison’s books about a witch named Rachel. Not so science fictiony, but kinda close.
-
I’m reading Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut, not as exotically science-fictiony as his other works but it’s about the future (from 1952) and how automation creates a world underclass. Resonates quite well with modern times, actually….
-
I’m reading the Hunger Games series, which isn’t half-bad. It’s kind of science fictiony; it’s a dystopian society? So, yeah. There’s technology in it, too, but it does focus on the poverty stricken who don’t reap the benefits of all of this newfangled wonderfulness, and when the main character has to participate in the Games, she’s bewildered.…[Read more]

I JUST finished Hunger Games! Like 3 days ago. It’s not usually my thing, since I’m not usually into the YA stuff, but I thought most of it was pretty cool. I haven’t seen or read Battle Royale, but I’m aware that a lot of the plot may be similar to that movie/book/manga, so I’m pretty curious about that right now.

So, scriptwriters of ASS:
I have a theory that chick flicks would be WAY better if they were chicks-who-dig-chicks-flicks. I know all the cliched romantic tropes in chick flicks annoy the shit out of me, but what if it were silly lesbionic quips that were being thrown around? Eh? Eh?
-
THIS.
I would like more silly, happy lesbionic movies please. Or for someone to remake You’ve Got Mail with queers.
-
And instead of crappy soundtracks they’d all just be start-to-finish Tegan and Sara. That would be aurally pleasing.
-
‘You’ve Got Mail With Queers’ that sounds fantastic.
Personally I want a ‘Nicole & Nora’s Infinite Playlist’ where two hot indie girls are on whirlwind adventure/hunt for a secret Tegan and Sara show.
That works, right?-
I would watch that movie so many times.
There’s a chapter in Kiss My Tiara where the author reimagines blockbuster movies for a feminist audience; it makes me want to do a blog post doing the same, but with queer folk.

-
Does The Fifth Element fall under that umbrella? Because Secretly Cuddly Butch Taxi Driver Falls For Mystical Embodiment Of Weird Shit would be watched on a weekly basis in my house.
-
Ohmygod. I am so with you.
I have to let Imagine Me and You rest every once in a while…..but every time Thirteen Going On Thirty goes in, a lesbian loses her wings.
-
To that end (this is gayboys, but they’ll do in a pinch)….you guys should all check out this kickstarter:
I figure a donation of $25 is kind of like seeing the movie in the theatre or buying the DVD (which he’ll send you as a thanks)….so it’s really just paying upfront for something you’ll end up seeing anyway…..
His…[Read more]

While my first film Dark of Moon (http://www.darkofmoon.com) has a gay male couple in it, my next film (at least, the one I’ll be working like hell to get financed) will have a lesbian relationship at the centre, and it’s a romantic comedy. The basic plot is:
A temporary housing situation causes two college girls, Rachel and Melissa, to meet. The…[Read more]
