TravelStraddle 12 years agoHi, I’m an Aussie headed to Europe for 6 weeks over Christmas. Some of my stops are Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice), Munich, Paris and London. I’d love to meet up with someone. I speak decent French and a little German (not really enough for a conversation).

TravelStraddle 12 years agoHey all looking for travel advice…
1. Anyone know what the English is like in Italy, Spain or Germany?
2.Best places in Europe that I can get by with English?
3. If you have been to a country that didn’t speak English (or another language that you are fluent in) how did you cope?Just a memo being I’m planning to stay for 3 months so I’ll kind…[Read more]

I haven’t ever been in Europe for longer than a week or so, but in case you’re interested, the Netherlands is particularly good as (in my experience, anyway!) Dutch people do tend to know English. I also went to Berlin recently and most (though not all) people did speak English, at least a little.

I love the Netherlands! I want to learn Dutch and live there, everyone can speak English there and in Flanders!

Any metroploitan city in Europe will be fairly easy to navigate in English. English is the default international option, so any area catering to tourists will likely have a lot of English speaking people and signs.
I’ve lived abroad several times in countries where I did not speak the language and have never had big problems getting around or…[Read more]

I agree with the others, you shouldn’t have a problem. One thing you should do though, is try to learn the language — when I was last travelling I found listening to pod casts was great, and easy to do while you were on trains, planes etc. The most important word you’ll need is excuse me. The German is “entschuldigung,” which takes some…[Read more]

If you want to go north, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland are essentially bilingual countries… most people you meet will be fluent and the ones who aren’t can still speak conversational English. They are kind of expensive though, especially Norway. Sweden is a little cheaper than Denmark.
Germany in the cities is fine… touristy parts of…[Read more]

Academics Anonymous: Study Trouble R' Us. 12 years, 1 month agoThe worst thing is: I’m the youngest and therefore the last of my friends to graduate. So there’s nobody to make thesis dates in the library with. :( Anyone in here feels like doing mutual digital motivation mail appointments with me ?

Hey, I am another Aussie, currently living in Denmark at the moment but I will travelling over Christmas before heading back down under. I’ll be going to Italy amongst other places… my itinerary isn’t fixed yet but maybe if we’re in the same place at the same time we can grab a coffee / plate of pasta / beer? :)
Hey I’m in London and another Aussie :)
