    Hey Vancouver-straddlers
So, I’ve just been offered a place at UBC in January for the MLIS and I wondered if any of you had any advice? Particularly since I’ll be coming from the UK and am oscillating wildly between excitement and sheer terror on a minute by minute basis! Has anyone got any experience with student housing? My friendly, currently-local Vancouver rep suggested living on campus for the first year, possibly in Green College (?), but I cant find any real info on where would be a queer friendly space outside the West End and the Drive…? Help? Please?!
    Thanks in advance, awesome folks

    • Ouuu welcome in advance! I haven’t moved there yet myself, so I lack any real advice for you I’m afraid, but I wanted to say hello. Hopefully someone will be able to help out!
PS – also I think I may know someone in your program, weee!

      • You do? That’s pretty cool! I mean, as long as they are cool, at least… When are you moving? Do you want to be lost and out of our depths buddies? ;-)

        • Yeahhhh I do! I move at the end of the summer, PM me anytime! (and she seems super cool! Haven’t met her yet, but she’s lovely over the interwebs ;) )

          • Awesome! I don’t move ’til January , but it’s really good to have people and explorations lined up and ready! Thank you :D (And good to know. Is she doing it now, or about to? :) )

    • UBC has a beautiful campus. I didn’t live on campus, but I’ve heard that Green College is very nice. The West end/Davie Street is most definitely queer friendly. The Drive is as well. You’ll tend to find a more relaxed hippie vibe on Commercial Drive than on Davie. Usually more women/female-identified queers on the Drive as well.

Oh! And since you’ll be a graduate student, I know there is a rather active queer graduate student social club at UBC that draws a lot of people. There’s also meetup.com that’s popular to meet new queers.
