Lesbrarians 12 years, 3 months agoso, i’ve been lazy/busy with work, but thought this group was a little neglected. i know from people who’ve commented so far that they’re either library students, library staff/librarians, fans & supporters of libraries…but what’s YOUR angle, you sexy lurker, you? what do you want to talk about in this group? a particular type of library? the…[Read more]

Autostraddle Musicians 12 years, 3 months agoAny other composers here? What sorts of things are you working on right now? I’m almost finished with a piece for voice, and I really love it. I’m starting to think that maybe vocal writing is my “thing” and I should focus on that more from now on.
-
i arranged an accompanied brahms lied for piano solo, does that count?
by the way what notation program(s) do you use, do you have any recommendations? i use musescore and it’s quite fiddly, i guess nothing compares to the ease of pencil and eraser.-
I’d recommend Sibelius, its not perfect but it can do almost anything; and its pretty intuitive so it doesn’t take too long to learn.
BUT its suuuper expensive so you’d need to download it or get a cracked copy, unless you’re rich-
nah, dude. I’m all about finale. But really, it’s not that different from sibelius. They’re both great software choices. I’ve been using finale for a couple of years now, and it’s been pretty great.
-
One of my fellow comp majors said that Sibelius vs. Finale is like Mac vs. PC for composers, and I think he’s right. Anyway, I’m on Team Sibelius – I find it less confusing to use and I like the look of the scores better.

Autostraddle has a social networking group for Chicagoans?! I have been so out of the loop…
-
Yes we do! We started on FB after a couple of meet ups, then one of the Straddlers (Marika or Jon?) got this ball rolling. You should join the Chicagostraddlers group on FB as well, it’s where I post first about meet ups. :)
-
I did the FB group, but Marika started this one. We still use the FB mostly for chatting obsessively with each other though :)
-
-
Good to know, definitely just found y’all on FB. Hooray!

If you haven’t already, please contact Intern Elli, Marika, or myself to be added to our FB Chicagostraddlers group as well. We use chat pretty much 24/7. Seriously, it a little gross how much we all love each other. :)

Autostraddle Musicians 12 years, 4 months agoWhat’s up other autostraddling musicians? Maybe every one should put a quick snippet of what their deal is here, you never know what kind of musicians there will be :D
I play bass in a band right now, just a punk band. I love electro and music that can make you move and vocals that feel urgent.
How about you guys?
-
I’ve been messing around with guitar on and off the last few years, playing everything from hard rock to acoustic-y pop, but I’m self-taught and still very much an amateur. I mostly have it because I grew up with instruments (played violin and piano for many years) and feel weird if I don’t have one around.
-
I’m a composer, and I’ve been writing my own music since I was 15 or so, but it’s only been any good since I started college and it became my major. I also play cello and bass (bass guitar & upright bass) and a little bit of piano, and I sing. Anyway, the piece I’m currently working on is a solo vocal piece with flute, English horn and bass gu…[Read more]

I’m becoming a music therapist… I’m in school right now for it. Hopefully I can help lots of lots of people with my music!

“I write songs about death, butterflies…” I like you already ^-^
-
I write songs on the piano or guitar, and I sing. The stuff I write is usually confessional-type stuff, very Tori Amos I guess. I also play guitar and sing in a rock band :D

SO MANY FEELINGS going on in the world of Autostraddle musicians!
