Today I read Geisha, A Life by Mineko Iwasaki with Rande Brown translating (296 pages). Now would probably be a good time to mention that I’m disabled and since reading is one of the few things I can manage on high-pain days, this is all I did today. But it was a day well spent, because this was a fascinating autobiography.…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoJust finished the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, inspired by the movie and the new series of the BBC production coming out next month. It is spectacularly well written and it’s amusing to understand all the little nuances that the movies portray.

I just finished “Slammerkin” (384 pages), the second book in a row I’ve read by Emma Donoghue (the first being “Room”). Her prose is terrific and her themes are dark and I’m going to need to read something more lighthearted after this. “Slammerkin” tells the story of a teenage prostitute in 18th-century England for two years…[Read more] -

I just finished Whedonistas: A Celebration of the Worlds of Joss Whedon by the Women Who Love Them eds. Lynne M. Thomas and Deborah Stanish (196 pages).
Like the ‘Chicks Dig Time Lords’ collection before it, this book collects essays from female fans of Whedon’s shows on all manner of topics. There are essays about the…[Read more]-
this is going on my must-read list.

I liked it even better than the Smart Pop books on the show, although they’re really good too. If you like this one, you should check some of those out.

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoI just finished Jennifer Finney Boylan’s memoir, “I’m Looking Through You” (267 p). She has a great writing style, and she uses it to tell her story about growing up as a boy who is haunted by the woman she would become.
I really enjoyed this book. There are moments where I wonder if she’s just writing about my life, and there are moments w…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoJust finished two books: “Geek Love” by Katherine Dunn (348 pgs) and “The Sparrow” by Mary Doria Russell (404 pgs). “Geek Love” is a fascinating, well-written novel written from the perspective of a female albino dwarf hunchback who is the daughter of a traveling carnival pair who, in an attempt to increase their “freak…[Read more]

Might I add that I consider “The Sparrow” disappointing because I generally don’t continue to turn 100 or so pages in a book unless something within the book grabs my attention and “forces” me to keep reading, in a sense. I didn’t get interested until I was maybe half-way though. I dunno. Maybe not what I was looking for at the moment.

I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS RE: THE SPARROW. Also though I listened to it as a book on tape so that might have changed my perception of it. Geek Love sounds amazing; I have a weird fascination with circus literature, so I’ll definitely have to pick it up.

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months ago@internrachel @julia1 I just finished The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot (310 pages) . I’ve been wanting to read it for a while, I put it on hold at the library months ago and it finally showed up on Wednesday, I read it last night.
I felt like this was definitely a story that needed to be told. It’s the story of a woman nam…[Read more] -

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months ago@internrachel @julia1 I just finished Bright Before Us by Katie Arnold-Ratliff (288 pages) and I really need to read something uplifting next. It’s basically the story of this guy in his 20s who has spent his whole life in love with his childhood best friend, and his obsession with her destroys a lot of things in his life, including his…[Read more]

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoHi @internrachel @julia1 – I just finished ’French Milk’ by Luck Knisley (194 pages but a graphic novel so counts as 97). This served as an interlude in my reading of ’Poppy Shakespeare’ which I’m not really getting into.
I refered to ’French Milk’ as a graphic novel but to be honest it’s more of a journal. In it Lucy documents a six week trip awa…[Read more] -

Autostraddle Summer Book Club 2011 12 years, 3 months agoI’m finally done with The Swimming-Pool Library by Alan Hollinghurst (336 pages). It’s been my “take to work and read on the Metro” book, which is in retrospect a questionable choice because it is pretty awkward to read on the Metro sitting next to someone. In the story, the protagonist says about a book, “I resented its professional neatness…[Read more]

Well, this sounds terribly disappointing. For a book the dares to call itself ‘The Swimming-Pool Library’ I’d expect something much more delightfully Doctor Who-ish (sixth bullet down).
